The goal is to better understand the dynamics of individual decision-making between participants in collective protest actions under repressive conditions from the State using biographical narratives. The book covers multiple discussions with five young activists involved in the three largest protest events since Ukrainian independence in 1991: the Ukraine without Kuchma Movement of 2000–2001, the Orange Revolution of 2004, and the Euromaidan protests of 2014.

A group of student survivors (from this high school) quickly reacted, and within days of the shooting, created an anti-gun violence movement called March for Our Lives and made public appeals for legislative reform. Social protest of student survivors of a high school massacre took place in a context of a dominant, pro-gun American culture; political change involved violence and public debates on policy to ensure issues related to school safety were addressed. This chapter expands on existing research to identify important factors involved in local and national struggles for power in student collective actions in the U.S. The two primary research questions are: (1) How did students engage in protests and to what effect? (2) What were the public's and government's reactions to the students' collective actions?

In particular, it examines how those who face the biggest impact, namely, public high school students, navigate their marginalized position as minors, to challenge the structures of authority represented by their parents and school administration. This chapter demonstrates the importance of personal identity claims, social networks, and the power of knowledge of one’s First Amendment rights, as mobilizing forces for students to demand social change. Case studies of protest by students to overturn book bans are examined. The purpose is to understand the effect of state prohibitions on education that strengthen a student’s symbolic power as a force in society, and in some cases, fosters resistance through community-level activism.
