Mapping of land use and land cover is important for managing Natural resources. Remote sensing pl... more Mapping of land use and land cover is important for managing Natural resources. Remote sensing plays a vital role in mapping of existing land resources information at a particular period. The study area Jabalpur Block of India, situated in the state of Madhya Pradesh. IRS P6 LISS-III data of 2006 was used to map the land cover types and their land use. Of the digital classification techniques, unsupervised classification and Fuzzy C Means were used in the study. Results indicate the Forest cover as 290.66sq.km and which is proportionately 37.10% of the total geographic area of Jabalpur Block. The dominant land cover in the study area is forest, which calls for the proper planning of the said land cover, so that this land cover can be utilized effectively. Further, next to this class the agriculture is the majority area among the identified classes of land use/land cover. This classified data used in wide variety of area such as planning, resource management, economic development, change detection etc. The present study is helpful in assessing and quantifying the land cover of Jabalpur Block and this information can be used for monitoring status of forests.
