Northern and southern hemisphere polar and sub-polar ocean circulation, fluxes of heat, salt and freshwater, variability on timescales from seasonal to interannual and decadal; use of hydrographic inverse methods. Climate interests include applications of ocean modelling and of remote sensing; also meteorology, marine and terrestrial glaciology, sedimentology, palaeo-oceanography.
Seagoing technical expertise: familiar with most major aspects of physical oceanographic instrumentation: CTDs, various acoustic Doppler current profilers, high-precision ship navigation, salinometers, moored instrumentation, autonomous floats.
