This paper compares the performance of the conventional unified power quality conditioner and ope... more This paper compares the performance of the conventional unified power quality conditioner and open unified power quality conditioner energized by lithium ion battery based on the Volt Ampere rating, total harmonic distortion, phase jumping mitigation points of view. Many sensitive loads affected not only by the voltage sag but also by the variation in phase angle so that a pre-sag compensation method is used. A comparison between the two configurations shows that open unified power quality conditioner requires lower rating for semiconductor switches in the cases of balance and unbalance voltage sag compensation as well as phase jumping elimination and harmonics minimization.

Faults causes balance or unbalance voltage sag and phase jumping. Sensitive loads effected not only by the voltage sag but also by the variation in phase angle specially the motor drive systems. Increase in power loss has bad economic effect due to the energy wasted. It harms the consumer due to the drop in voltage, in addition the increase in power loss lead to increase in gas emission from thermal generating plant, therefore many efforts are consumed for minimizing the power loss in power system. In this paper, the static synchronous series compensator (SSSC) is incorporated in radial distribution system with one of the efficient artificial intelligence known as particle swarm optimization (PSO) to find the best phase angle for the injected voltage in order to minimize the power loss. The PSO program is interfaced with the proposed power system and the information is exchanged every specified period. This gives the system optimization and monitored from time to time.
