In particular, changes in regional groundwater quantity and quality are now a major concern to human societies and livelihoods in the coastal regions where about 70% of the world population resides, and in the arid and semi-arid regions where freshwater is already a crucial resource for survival (BGR, 2008; Voudouris et al., 2010 and Abd-Elhamid, 2010). Moreover, recent empirical and assessment evidence revealed that changes in groundwater conditions due to climate changes and human activities (e.g., unsustainable extraction of groundwater, irrigation, waste and pollutants disposal, urbanization and land use changes) would undermine the usefulness of groundwater for domestic, industry, and agricultural purposes. Hence, this paper attempts to improve the understanding of groundwater systems and likely changes due to natural and anthropogenic pressures, as well as provide a sys...

In the light of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) projection for severe and extreme weather conditions in the 21st Century, the author identifies climate change as a phenomenon that brings severe consequences to both human environment and livelihood. The inadequacies of tackling the problem in developing countries are emphasized as dependent on several biophysical and socio-economic processes. The paper is aimed at showing how climate and human systems influence the level of vulnerability and adaptation to climate change based on a theoretical climate change vulnerability framework by proposing the identification of determinants of vulnerability as basic that can facilitate the understanding of the dynamics of vulnerability and the timely incorporation of adaptation strategies into developmental policies.

Qualitative methodologies are utilized based on reviewed literature, semi-structured interviews, personal experiences and structured questionnaires. Reported two-year findings illustrate that effective potential EMS for Nigeria’s higher education, demands policy-oriented government directives and commitments in terms of strict regulatory legislation and coordination of related management support. While EMS implementation blockage is due to a lack of government initiative and managerial commitment accompaniment throughout Nigeria’s overall education sector. This blockage includes inadequate salary structures, lack of funding, insufficient academic curriculum and disconnect between universities and soci...

A detail understanding of such impacts demands the integration of relevant environmental monitoring and assessments of biophysical and socioeconomic systems before planned developments in the region. Over the years, an integrated approach to environmental monitoring has not been very successful, especially at the local and regional scale, because of vague conceptualization and lack of clear objectives and priorities linked to the interpretation of roles and responsibilities for compliance with existing environmental regulatory and management programs. This paper proposes a framework for integrating relevant environmental monitoring, as well as a potential theory of practice for the assessment of biophysical and socioeconomic systems in the context of planned developments. It highlights environmental monitoring and as...

This indication indirectly exacerbates the vulnerability of relating coastal communities. Using this viewpoint, a decade long study between 2000-2010 conceptualises a considerable volume of research in the area of vulnerability to urban environmental change due to disasters in relation to climatic events. In particular, several studies have attempted to present a discourse on the vulnerability of social ecological systems to hazards or risk occurrence within urban coastal environments in order to improve understanding and support for the assessment of impacts and risks related to such change and, by definition, its associating adaptive measures. This overview takes into account disparate opinions, approaches and methodologies applied by different scientific viewpoints and research studies, and highlights salient an...

The study used quantitative survey methods and a sample size of 1134 Nigerian students of the three types of higher institutions in Nigeria: universities, polytechnics, and colleges of higher education based on student state residential location. The respondents completed a questionnaire via Google Forms in June and July 2020. The study found that students are not satisfied with virtual learning embarked upon by many higher institutions throughout the country during the COVID-19 lockdown and would not want the online learning to continue after the pandemic due to poor internet infrastructure and lack of electricity. The study concluded that students of higher education in Nigeria have a low acceptance of online learnin...

The concern about national and international security has increased significantly since the incident of September 11th, 2001 attacks. However, information overload thwarts the effective and efficient analysis of criminal activities. Application of data mining in the context of law enforcement and intelligence analysis holds the promise of solving such problems. The benefit of data mining for police seems tremendous, yet only a few limited ...

Un... more Poor waste management is increasingly becoming a major challenge for municipalities, globally. Unlike previous waste management studies in Nigeria, this study examines the implications of waste management to regional greenhouse gas emissions based on awareness levels and perception of urban inhabitants. Benin City was divided into four residential zones: core, intermediate, suburban, and planned estates. Blocking was utilized to collect data from a total of 2720 randomly selected inhabitants through a self-administered survey. Results reveals low awareness level in terms of indiscrimination dumping of waste, thereby promoting sustainable mitigation and adaptation measures region-wide. It is imperative to integrate various aspects of regional government services such as infrastructure, urban planning and development, socioeconomics, public health, and regulation enforcement. Waste management policy is strengthened via working groups, community, and regional authorities.

The burden of non-communicable diseases of these people is, by in large, connected to a lack of access to effective and affordable medical care, weak financing, and delivery of health services. Policymakers have assumed, until recently, that poor people in developing countries would not pay health insurance premiums for the cost of future hospitalization. The emergence of community-based health financing (CBHF) has brought forth a renewed and empowered alternative. CBHF schemes are designed to be sustainable, varying in size, and well organized. Developing countries, such as Nigeria, have been testing and finetuning such schemes in the hope that they may 1 day reciprocate high-income countries. Methods A sample size of 372 respondents was used to assess the slums of Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, Nigeria, and empirically evaluate the socio-demographic cha...

The economic burden of such events has forced a vast reallocation of monetary resources for clean-up and recovery, as well as forcibly altered and suspended internal trade via devastated transportation routes. Secondary trends include inflation and migration concerns. As a result, the aim has been to prioritize mitigation by examining easily read, rapidly accessible flood hazard maps, as well as assess and identify areas within the city prone to flooding. We used a number of data sources and conducted a questionnaire surveying three of the local government areas of Benin City over a two-year period. Findings indicate excessive unsustainable land use and land cover change and a flat and high water table area with close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean make the city susceptible to flood risk. Heavy rainfall and drainage system blockage are ...

The re-assessment of participatory knowledge is analysed and incorporated into EIA project planning, design and implementation. A case study within the five divisions of the Kampala District used 250 semi-structured and open-ended survey questionnaires and 20 key informants by way of piecewise random sampling. The findings suggest that the majority of respondents were non-informed, on components of CoP, within the selected EIA projects. The CoP revealed concerns regarding Uganda’s security and corruption which intertwined on how the CoP was conducted. We provide original data on the CoP in relation to EIA projects with the intention of facilitating public sector entities a suitable level of knowledge in aiding affected communities.
