The long-term goal of my research is a better understanding of a rather controversial research subject: world society. Since organizations are considered to be of paramount importance in this world society, I focus primarily on the sociology of organizations. In particular, I am interested in specific types of organizations such as so-called meta-organizations and digital platforms as well as the relationship between organizational and non-organizational social forms.
My current research focuses on (meta-)organizations involved in ocean governance. This includes not only political actors responsible for setting and enforcing regulations, such as fishing quotas. Of particular interest to me in this context are organizations that bridge different sectors of society, such as scientific organizations that collect and disseminate ocean-related knowledge to advise actors in other sectors of society.
Based on this empirical interest, I seek to develop sociological theory, especially systems theory and institutional theory, and explore the variants of functional analysis.

Discussions of this organisational form, however, tend to lack a coherent theoretical framing. In this paper, I argue that the distinction between platform organising and platform organisation helps to reduce some of the equivocality in the discussion. So far, the literature has focused on the novelty of the 'organisational form' without reflecting the inherent ambiguity of the meaning of this term: whereas some scholars use it to describe a new kind of 'social ordering', others associate it with 'formal organisation'. I show that both understandings are relevant, but that they should be kept separate for analytical reasons. Platform organisations are formal organisations which are dependent on the technological infrastructure of a digital platform. Platform organising, however, is a new kind of social ordering, which combines organising outside and organising inside of formal organisations. Platform organising entails four processes: providing (organising technology), regulating (organising markets), integrating (organising networks), and orchestrating (organising the emerging meta-organisation). In shedding light on these processes in their interplay with platform organisations, this paper proposes a theoretical framework providing a basis for both further conceptual considerations and empirical research.

They argue that the proliferation of organization in modernity has not yet been properly understood in light of the absence of organization in premodern times. The authors therefore ask: Why do organizations proliferate? Why do they proliferate in such manifold organizational forms? And how can these heterogeneous forms nevertheless be related to a common problem to which organizations provide a solution? A comparative historical analysis based on the theory of social systems reveals that organizations fill a gap which the decline of morality as an integrative success medium created.
