The special collections of National Central Library (NCL) range from the bronze and stone rubbing... more The special collections of National Central Library (NCL) range from the bronze and stone rubbings, Han dynasty wood strips, Dunhuang scrolls, rare and exquisite Chinese books from Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. The rich collection of Chinese ancient texts and rare books provides a broad spectrum of sources for the understanding of imperial China’s literary, cultural, ethical, social, and economic activities. The NCL has been enthusiastic at making the collected items be digitized and providing public access. To facilitate scholarly research, the NCL established an international joint and sharing of bibliographic resources on Chinese rare books called “Union Catalog”. The catalog comprises over 790,000 titles at 81 institutions worldwide. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce how the Taipei Public Library established an ... more Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce how the Taipei Public Library established an intelligent library that offers automated service equipped with radio frequency identification (RFID) and a self‐checkout system. The study concludes with suggestions offered for the reference of the Taipei Public Library and other public libraries in setting up similar automated libraries in the future.Design/methodology/approach – The study examines the functions of the Ximen Intelligent Library as provided to 106 patrons who are under observation. Afterwards, a questionnaire is distributed to obtain the personal information of these patrons and the specific nature of their patronage of the library. It was launched on November 8, 2016 and provides open-access e-books. In 2015, National Central Library began inviting university libraries, public libraries, government agencies, and research institutions to participate in the digitization project. The subject of digitization is the Chinese-language books published in Taiwan or mainland China from 1911 to 1949. A total of 15,000 books were collected; another 91 government organizations also joined in the effort, thereby adding 795 e-files and 1,433 printed government publications; finally, a total of 357 individuals also authorized 1,106 volumes of their published works.
