This presentation, published in the Proceedings of the First Conference on History and Theory of Architecture in Athens (ΑΣΚΤ, May 2014), highlights the positive response of inter-war pioneers to the above question. The systematic attempt to associate Greek heritage (ancient and vernacular) with modernism, addresses the publications of the notorious Parisian magazine Cahiers d'Art between 1926-1934. Antiquity, primitive art (as Christian Zervos and Sigfried Giedion like to call Cycladic and Minoan findings), Aegean folk art and architecture, as well as the rugged geological relief of Greece, are linked to a new design ethos, in the shadow of the emerging European totalitarianism, rehearsing the aesthetic and cultural tastes of the 20th century.
