Panorama, in Thessaloniki, comprising mostly free-standing single family homes, is chosen as a case study (1950-2000), since, owing to its transformation from a refugee settlement to one of the most desirable residential areas in Thessaloniki, Panorama acts as a pole of attraction for the collective imaginary. The methodological approach adopted to study these houses is that of reading their architectural drawings as texts which contain elements of human relationships and expectations in a symbolic manner. In order to study the notion of the imaginary formation – the moment of the embodiment of the imaginary as real- the thesis turns to the interpretation of the tropes with which the imaginary is articulated with and manifested through the symbolic by introducing a second system of representations: the filmic representations of the...

The study discusses the depiction of suburban houses in Greek films produced during the 1950-1960’s, a period during which the growth of post-war Greek cinema coincided with the development of the post-war Greek city. It traces the imagery of suburban houses in four Greek popular films from a time when the film production industry was only superseded by the building frenzy that completely transformed Greek urban (and suburban) space after WWII. Starting from descriptions of the films’ spatial iconography, the paper ex...

In order to counter the city’s limited economic resources and cultural infrastructure, the event’s vision was based on the two assets that Pafos has in abundance: a rich cultural heritage and a community eager for change. This paper tracks the uneven path of community involvement during the ECoC bidding, planning, implementation and post-implementation stages, and looks at urban heritage as the shared field of convergence for the multiple modes and degrees of participation in the realization of a mega-event. The city’s small size allows for original insights into the opportunities and limitations of the intersections between community, heritage and scale in the case of mega-event-based urban regeneration.

The projects included in the bid aim to create a series of interlocking public spaces in Pafos's loosely-knit urban fabric, as an attempt to weave the city and its citizens back together. The paper presents the process of shaping the spatial component of the Open-Air Factory concept and discusses the ideas underlying some of the bid's cornerstone proposals, as tools for examining issues of centrality in the context of a dispersed city and culture as an instrumental agent in shaping urban futures.

Pafos' rich architectural heritage became the starting point for a plan that aspires to create a cohesive urban fabric by weaving together the spatial, cultural, economic, social and environmental threads in the place-making process. People from different cultural, social and professional backgrounds combined their expertise in order to draw a vision of a revitalized, well-organized and integrated city. The success of Pafos' Bid demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach, and set it as the basis for the Municipality's " Comprehensive, Sustainable Urban Development Plan " , consequently submitted to EU structural Funds. Within the Plan's framework, the process of applying for and allocating funding involves the development of spatial infrastructure and the organization of cultural events as means to address issues of social segregation, urban blight and unemployment. The Plan focuses on the rehabilitation of distinct buildings and landscapes in order to reshape a spatial nexus of collective memory, civic reference and economic vibrancy. It also seeks to provide social, cultural and fiscal incentives for relocating businesses (trade, arts and crafts, local products etc.) and people so as to achieve Sustainability by preserving community cohesion, inducing continuous occupation and social vitality, and stabilizing financial growth. With Pafos as a case study, the paper questions the effectiveness of " Creative-Class " theories related to small cities, and instead explores the integration of " Community-based " arts, culture and creativity methodologies in issues of architectural cultural heritage. It discusses the sustainability benefits of re-purposing assets of place, involving residents in creating healthy environments, building social capital and civic capacity, strengthening social interaction, and shifting prevalent thinking to introduce social change.
