It is argued that that participation may exist only on a conceptual and ideological level in government policies in South Africa, resulting in the practice of diffusion communication. This article reports on how the communication approach of the Thusong Service Centres with their communities in Tshwane align with the normative principles of participatory development communication. A qualitative research approach was adopted to gather data, and purposive sampling was used, focusing on the six Thusong Service Centres in Tshwane, which are considered to be development communication vehicles. It was found that Thusong Service Centres do not fully meet the required principles of participatory development communication, which was used as the theoretical framework in this research. This inadequate alignment with the principles of participatory development communication implies that authentic development is...

It is assumed that political posters in a developing democracy should do more than canvas votes; they should also inform and motivate voters. Against this background it was investigated how the two main political issues on the poster agenda, crime and unemployment, were portrayed in the context of a young democracy. The focus on crime shifted to a focus on corruption, while unemployment was increasingly framed as an economic issue rather than a political issue. Furthermore, the focus was on how political parties referred to democratic values on posters. It was concluded that the importance to vote was emphasized more as the fear of a two-thirds African National Congress (ANC) majority started to subside. However, it would seem that political parties became more negative regarding the state of the democracy as time went by. Lastly, an overview is given of the role ...

In recent years much discourse on the media and democracy correlation has focused on the potential role of the Internet in facilitating political communication by establishing a virtual public sphere. This article investigates the extent to which the South African (IEC) and Canadian electoral commissions' websites have succeeded in establishing a virtual public sphere. The Elections Canada web site (representing an established democracy) has succeeded better at resembling some of the normative principles of the public sphere theory than has the IEC.

Internal stakeholders such as employees are not so much concerned about how the organisation is visually represented as about the behavioural aspects of the organisation. Companies are continually finding themselves in positions where they are encouraged to manage their corporate identities with a view to managing their reputations so as ultimately to strengthen and maintain good relationships with their stakeholders. The realisation that employees form part of the external corporate identity of a company has shifted the focus of corporate identity management inwards towards employees as an internal stakeholder group. Although it is assumed that good corporate identity management leads to good relationships, little research has been done on the direct link between the two concepts. Research in this regard has fou...

Added to the complex environment in which South African non-profit organisations (NPOs) operate, is the communication relationship between NPOs and their corporate donors (as stakeholders of one another). This relationship is important for the survival and financial sustainability of the NPOs and to the corporate companies’ adherence to stakeholder demands and guiding principles such as set out in the King III Report (IoDSA 2009). In this article, findings resulting from partially structured interviews with NPO managers, corporate social investment (CSI) officers of South African corporate companies and independent CSI consultants are discussed. This study maps the complex shared and divergent perceptions of communication relationships between social development NPOs and their donors, and finds that not only is the communication relations strained, but a corporate communication perspective alone is not suitable to describe (or manage) this specific relationship.
