Jake Madoff
As for my academic accomplishment and pursuits—currently, I regard almost everything as pabulum. However, I found my niche in Environmental Studies. For the sake of brevity: I am a junior at The Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU. As I'm sure one may gather from the name, each student must craft a unique curriculum and concentration. My concentration was recently accepted by the university; the formal title it fairly long, but it does do a good job communicating all my areas of interest/passion: 'Comprehensive Environmentalism: Environmental Studies in the Fields of Biogeochemistry, Ethics, Policy, Psychology, Architecture, and Economics'. I want to learn about—what I strongly consider—the paramount facets in the multifaceted subject of Environmental Studies. My courses typically have a philosophical undertone (this excludes those of ecology, earth systems science and economics). Concordantly, my policy courses generally deal with the fundamental thinkers of social contract theory (Hobbes, Locke) and political theory (John Rawls, Robert Nozick). The ethics courses I have taken have been exclusively in the scope of environmental ethics (this includes everyone from Aldo Leopold, Sober Elliot, to Tom Regan, to name a few), with the exception of a course in morality which provided a fairly comprehensive exposition on the primary headings of metaethics, normative, applied and value ethics. A side note: I am about to begin my third independent study. It is entitled, "Ecopsychology." My past two tackled environmental hermeneutics and ecological urbanism. I hope to submit one more before I graduate, one which expounds environmental euthenics and aspects of meliorism.)
