Yet again the Internet Archiving is suffering big this time, a coalition of major record labels filed a lawsuit against the Internet Archive demanding $700 million for the extensive catalog of 78 rpm records. 78s are sometimes more than a century old at this point and i bet a lot of them are out of copyright, but i suppose for the few that still are majors are hitting it big towards the IA

This lawsuit is pretty much another existential threat to the Internet Archive and everything it preserves, including the Wayback Machine, and we're fucked if we ever lose access to the Wayback Machine.

the original article asked to sign a petition, but i think a more logical way to support is to donate them directly so that they have more money to better defend themselves in court in this and other cases they'll undoubtedly face in the future

  • Identity Check was spotted on a OnePlus 13 running the Android 16 beta.
  • The feature is expected to arrive on more Android phones with the Android 16 update coming later this year.
  • It requires a change to Android's biometric prompt code, which can't be completed without a full update.

When enabled, Identity Check requires biometric authentication to view or modify certain sensitive parts on your Android smartphone. A fingerprint or face unlock is required for the following actions when your device is outside of a trusted location:

  • Accessing saved passkeys and app passwords
  • Changing PIN, pattern, or password, and turning off Find My

For these actions, biometric authentication is mandatory outside of trusted locations with Identity Check enabled — a password, PIN, or pattern won't work as an alternative. This is intended to prevent people from hijacking your Google account or other online accounts in the event your phone is lost or stolen, even if the bad actor knows your password.

Explanation for newbies: The GNU/Linux copypasta is an argument made by Richard Stallman that the operating system should be referred to as "GNU/Linux" or "GNU+Linux" because linux is just the kernel and what makes it useful are the various GNU programs and libraries like coreutils and glibc.

Alpine Linux is a linux distribution that ships without any GNU software (though it can be installed using the package manager).

Summary

London talks aimed at securing a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia have been downgraded and will no longer include US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff.

The US state department blamed logistical reasons, but it was clear the decision was last-minute and left the Foreign Office wrongfooted.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has ruled out recognising occupied Crimea as Russian territory, after reports suggested this was being considered by the US and the Kremlin. "Ukraine does not legally recognise the occupation of Crimea. There's nothing to talk about," said Zelensky.

Ukraine's ministry of strategic industries said it was "naïve" to expect Ukraine to change its position on "non-negotiable" issues such as Crimea.

The U.S. should stop making threats and resorting to coercion if it wants to make a deal, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

I went ahead and finished up Arkham City today. Initially i was on the fence about doing the riddler trophies, and while i was deciding i started doing a few, and then before i knew it i had literally all of theme except like 8 catwoman trophies and the combat ones done. Since i'm already so close, im just going to try and 100% it because as far as i know it's just Harley Quinn's and Riddler DLCs left after the campaign, and i imagine they can't take that long.

Yesterday i listed a bunch of things that scared me (in a good way), but one thing that scared the shit out of me when i was little was the Mad Hatter quest Batman. There was nothing psychological about it, the Rabbit Batman mask just freaked the fuck out of little me. Still does to an extent. It's just very unsettling. The quest is a lot of fun though.

After completing the story and going back through for the riddler trophies i found these two, which are one of the Riddles, just chilling together and having a heartwarming talk about how they've been apart for so long that they'd like to be rejoined. Granted, they're conjoined twins who as far as i know have only recently been separated by the Joker and i can't tell if they mean literally or metaphorically rejoined.

I got to climb Wonder Tower again for some of the trophies i didn't grab, and i noticed there were Police Cars down in the main area which afaik weren't there during the first climb. It was a cool detail i noticed about the game.

Finally, backtracking a bit, i wanted to talk about the Clayface fight. I like how they used him in the Story. And any exposure for the Batman villians beyond the surface level ones i love (though, i guess Clayface himself could be considered surface level). Regardless though, i like the fight and how you have to use the freeze blast to fight him, with him summoning little clay figures that is offset by how much damage you've done. Not to mention tricking him into rolling into the Explosives is fun like the Bane fight in Asylum. One thing i will add though is that it slowed the fuck out of my PC for like a good 10 seconds whenever he exploded. That's the only time i've had this happen which is interesting

The U.S. expects Ukraine's response Wednesday to a peace framework that includes U.S. recognition of Crimea as part of Russia and unofficial recognition of Russian control of nearly all areas occupied since the 2022 invasion, sources with direct knowledge of the proposal tell Axios.

Why it matters: The one-page document the U.S. presented Ukrainian officials in Paris last week describes this as Trump's "final offer." The White House insists it's ready to walk away if the parties don't make a deal soon.

How come there is no real "wacky experimentation" side of the coffee community? The only one I can identify is the "snobby" coffee community (you know the one), and the rest being mostly just a refrained version of that.

Compare that to the homebrewing community, you have the snobbs (the mead community is infamous), but then there are the "prison hoochers", turning anything containing sugar into alcohol.

Where are the mavericks who perform the important societal task of discerning if "is coffee and cheeto-spice a good combo?" and "what happens if you brew coffee with red bull?"

On a more serious note it would be great so more people try different ways to spice coffee, instead of just trying to brew the flatest, "perfect" brew. I've found adding some fruity black tea to my coffee in a French press to work really well.

Levels of a little-known forever chemical known as TFA in European wines have risen “alarmingly” in recent decades, according to analysis, prompting fears that contamination will breach a planetary boundary.

Researchers from Pesticide Action Network Europe tested 49 bottles of commercial wine to see how TFA contamination in food and drink had progressed. They found levels of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), a breakdown product of long-lasting Pfas chemicals that carries possible fertility risks, far above those previously measured in water.

Wines produced before 1988 showed no trace of TFA, the researchers found, but those after 2010 showed a steep rise in contamination. Organic and conventional wines showed a rise in TFA contamination, but levels in organic varieties tended to be lower.

I've been using evince to open PDFs. But for larger PDFs it is quite laggy, for selecting the text and stuff like that. Is this just a limitation of my computer, or are there faster alternatives to evince?

At a secret workshop in Ukraine’s north-east, where about 20 people assemble hundreds of FPV (first person view) drones, there is a new design. Under the frame of the familiar quadcopter is a cylinder, the size of a forearm. Coiled up inside is fibre optic cable, 10km (6 miles) or even 20km long, to create a wired kamikaze drone.

Capt Yuriy Fedorenko, the commander of a specialist drone unit, the Achilles regiment, says fibre optic drones were an experimental response to battlefield jamming and rapidly took off late last year. With no radio connection, they cannot be jammed, are difficult to detect and able to fly in ways conventional FPV drones cannot.

“If pilots are experienced, they can fly these drones very low and between the trees in a forest or tree line. If you are flying with a regular drone, the trees block the signal unless you have a re-transmitter close,” he observes. Where tree lined supply roads were thought safer, fibre optic drones have been able to get through.
