With the rise of Fascism in Europe, and particularly the ascent
of Germany’s Nazi Party, Jews in Germany and eastern and western Europe were forced to cope with an eroding civil and social status, increasing daily limitations, and a dark future on the horizon. This reality looked very different from the recent past of emancipation, in which Jewish citizens had enjoyed civic equality and the advance of social integration. In The Waning of Emancipation: Jewish History, Memory, and the Rise of Fascism in Germany, France, and Hungary, author Guy Miron examines how Jewish spokespeople from three European communities—Germany, France, and Hungary—confronted these challenges, and whether they coped by holding onto historical perceptions that materialized during the emancipation era or by adopting new views.

The articles express different views on Jewish identity in Hungary. The attitudes articulated in the articles reflect a variety of positions: some support full assimilation, others advocate integration that would enable the Jews to preserve their unique identity, and a few speak for Zionism.

Interpretation and Culture – A Series Edited by: Prof. Avi Sagi
Man`s nature is to interpret. Human beings, as individuals and as members of a society, are constantly engaged in the interpretation of their deeds, their values, their world and entire realm of activity. The act of interpretation is not the exclusive domain of scholars who research culture. Rather, it is first and foremost, common to every person in this world who strives to find meaning in all spheres of his activity. The act of interpretation is one of the distinguishing characteristics of human existence. Man as a creative thinker is not content with action alone. On the contrary, his acts are accompanied by explanation aimed at understanding. The art of interpretation is usually imbedded in the physical act itself. It is not confined to the light of awareness and methodological consciousness.
However, at times interpretation becomes the main focus of study and our attention is diverted from practice to theory. This transition marks the beginning of a new interpretive approach to the study of different areas of human activity by means of deciphering, analysis and description. Such work is carried out by the theoretician and interpretation becomes an independent research discipline.
The series ``Interpretation and Culture`` deals with interpretative instances. The books in the series treat the field of interpretation in various aspects: interpretation of literary, philosophical and theological texts, and interpretation of cultures and societies. Each and every book strives to propose an original, challenging interpretive reading.

Poland, which for some 130 years had been partitioned between its neighbouring empires—Russia, Austria, and Prussia—now gained independence, including in its territory some predominantly Ukrainian and Belarusian areas which had been part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Hungary, which had enjoyed extensive autonomy since the Ausgleich (Austro-Hungarian Compromise) of 1867, was now severed from the defunct Habsburg empire and became independent, but its boundaries were dramatically reduced as a result of the Treaty of Trianon. The two states, whose independence was part of a new European order based on the principle of national self-determination, were supposed to function as democracies and respect the rights of their minorities. In the immediate aftermath of 'the war to end all wars', there was reason to hope that the recognition of the Jews as equal citizens would lead to a golden age of...

This process had a major impact on the bourgeois Jewish habitus that developed during the emancipation era. In the spirit of the spatial turn in social studies (following Henri Lefebvre and Michel de Certeau), the article demonstrates how the shrinking of lived physical space yielded parallel mental processes. The discussion is based on close reading of diaries, predominantly those of Victor Klemperer and Willy Cohn, along with additional primary sources.

We argue that their reflections on vacations facilitated a rich discourse on the essence of Jewish bourgeois identity at a time of fundamental transitions. Our analysis utilizes three types of sources that encompass a variety of perspectives and sensibilities: personal diaries of Jewish vacationers, photo albums of Jewish families on vacations, and writings on vacations in Jewish newspapers. Following insights from the sociology of time, the article examines how reflections on vacations participated in the formation of the Jewish "lived time" under Nazism. Within this framework, our analysis indicates the dual function of vacation: as a realm of (bourgeois) normality, which underscores continuity, on the one hand; and, on the other hand, as a break with the normal flow of time, an ephemeral shelter from the experience of crisis. Consequently, the essay illuminates the roles that vacations played in the transformation of the spatial identity of German Jews. The steadily narrowing choice of vacation resorts accessible to them instigated various reactions among German Jews. In their reflections on the places of vacations, some conceived taking a vacation as an act of defiance, underscoring continuity in middle-class experiences, whereas others depicted the new spatial experiences as an opportunity to rethink Jewish identity.

The article describes and analyzes the development of the Israeli historiography of German Jewry ... more The article describes and analyzes the development of the Israeli historiography of German Jewry in the Nazi era. The beginning of the Israeli research in this field was part of the initiative of the Leo Baeck Institute (LBI) in Jerusalem – an organization that was established by former German Jewish Zionist leaders. Whereas the mainstream in Israeli historiography in the 1950s and 1960s tended to deal in general terms with questions regarding the whole European Jewry, LBI initiated a focused research in the leadership forms of German Jewry, mostly in the 1930s. After presenting various positions in this topic, as they were primarily presented in the LBI in the 1950s and 1960s, the article describes the “Israelization” of this research, starting in the 1970s. From this decade on, younger scholars and graduates of Israeli universities began to deal with this topic without having the personal involvement of the LBI founders.

Historian Peter Fritzsche has asserted that life under the Third Reich stirred tendencies of “intensified self-scrutiny” and encouraged some to express their inner life more explicitly in writing. “Letters and diaries”, he added, “provide valuable insights into the effort Germans made to come to terms with National Socialism” (Fritzsche 2008, 9; Steuwer 2017). Diary writing was a very common phenomenon among Jews under the Nazi regime, both in Germany as well in the occupied territories. Scholars are turning to close reading of diaries as a major source for social and cultural history of the Holocaust (Garbarini 2006; Goldberg 2017). Following the impact of the “spatial turn”, space is becoming more and more prominent in the field of Jewish Studies. Historians as well as scholars from other disciplines have recently reexamined a variety of phenomena in European and German Jewish history and suggested new interpretations using the concept of space (Gromova, Heinert and Voigt 2015; Lässig and Rürup 2017). In addition to dealing with changing Jewish attitudes to public, private, sacred spaces and other kinds of physical space, scholars use spatial metaphors to analyze cultural phenomena such as Jewish culture of memory (Roemer 2017), Jewish press (von der Krone 2017) and so on. This article examines the link between the physical spatial experiences of German Jews in Nazi Germany – predominantly their exclusion from different kinds of public spaces and their withdrawal into private spaces – and their growing tendency to express and recreate their selves by writing diaries and sometime also memoirs which is presented here as an inner metaphorical space. Following Moritz Foellmer’s discussion of the attempts of Berlin Jews to preserve and redefine their sense of individuality vis-à-vis their ever-growing exclusion under the Nazi regime (Foellmer 2013, 132–155), I will try to present how the ever growing experience of shrinking space – first in public and then also in private life –motivated German Jews to turn to the “space of writing”.

Papers by Guy Miron
