Interestingly, several Eastern European kabbalistic homilies reveal a moderate approach towards non-Jews, arguing for an essential spiritual partnership. Their authors adopted esoteric traditions that diverge from the radically polemical, negative attitude of the Zohar and the kabbalists of sixteenth-century Safed, according to which the non-Jew is the ultimate Other: evil, impure, and even demonic. Despite the important role of the Safed traditions in molding kabbalistic thought, these kabbalists proposed ideas found in works by the circle of Sefer Ha-temunah. These texts served as the basis on which some Eastern European kabbalists justified a new attitude towards the surrounding non-Jews, making them spiritual partners in the messianic process.

In this category we include Sefer Toldot Ya‘akov Yosef, by Ya‘akov Yosef of Pollonye; Sefer derekh pikudekhah, by Tsvi Elimelekh of Dinov; Sefer otsar ha-@hayim, by Yits@hak Eizik Ye@hiel Safrin; Likute halakhot, by Nathan Sternharts of Nemirov; Derekh mitsvotekhah, by Menachem Mendel Schneerson; and, finally, Sefer be’erat Miriam, by Avraham Abele Kanarfogel. We survey the works broadly and relate them to one defined literary genre. In so doing, we offer a new framework for a scholarly discussion of the Hasidic occupation with nomos and kabbalah. We demonstrate how Hasidic works discussing rationales for the commandments simultaneously employ halakhic and kabbalistic perspectives, emphasizing the punctiliousness in their fulfilment, their theurgic efficacy, and personal-spiritual completeness.

Cosmological descriptions and interpretations of the process of creation in kabbalistic literatur... more Cosmological descriptions and interpretations of the process of creation in kabbalistic literature deeply influenced various conceptual issues, especially the definition of “history.” Sefer Ha-Temuna, which first appeared in Byzantium over the course of the 14th century, presents a unique concept of history, in which the entire world operates according to a precise and predetermined model: The Sabbatical theory (Hebrew: Torat ha-shemitot). Its approach was criticized by the Safed Kabbalists in the 16th century. This article attempts to present how, despite the harsh opposition to it, this idea continued to influence Eastern European Kabbalists in later generations.

In those same years, R. David Shlomo Eybeschutz composed a kabbalistic commentary to Lamentations. Eybeschutz was a student of R. Meshulam Feibush Heller of Zbarazh, one of the first of the Beshtian Hasidim, and an important halachic decisor of his generation. Aside from the special literary form of the work, which combines “mournful” and “joyous” commentaries, it also quotes extensively from those kabbalistic works to which he had access. By tracing Eybeschutz’s ever-expanding kabbalistic library, we see a sharp change in his writing. In the course of writing the composition, Eybeschutz began to make use of the recensions of Lurianic teachings found in R. Meir Poppers’ Ets Hayyim and Peri Ets Hayyim, which were printed in Korets around the time of the commentary’s completion. This article discusses the significance of Eybeschutz’s late exposure to Lurianic kabbalah, which testifies to the degree of access which even outstanding students had to Lurianic manuscripts. The article also discusses the unique interpretation which Eybeschutz gave to Lurianic ideas concerning the role of Gentiles in the cosmic “rectification” (tiqun) after his exposure to Lurianic texts.

Cosmological descriptions and interpretations of the process of the creation of the world in kabb... more Cosmological descriptions and interpretations of the process of the creation of the world in kabbalistic literature deeply influenced various conceptual ideas, especially the definition of the concepts of “history” and “time.” Already in medieval kabbalah, there are two basic approaches to the concept of time: the first was expressed in the idea of cosmic cycles (Sabbaticals and Jubilees) by various Spanish kabbalists, first and foremost by Nahmanides. The second is the position of the Zohar, which virtually ignores this conception of cyclical world history.
The idea of “sabbaticals” which Nahmanides only hinted to, was developed more extensively in the Sefer haTemunah (lit. “Book of the Picture”), that first appears in Byzantium over the course of the 14th century. This book presents a unique concept of history in which the entire world operates according to a precise and predetermined model. This idea is contrary to the principle of “free will,” which presupposes that everyone has a personal responsibility to fix the world and themselves. Therefore, Sefer haTemunah was criticized by the Safed kabbalists of the 16th century: R. Moses Cordovero (“Ramak”) and R. Isaac Luria (“Ari”). This article, shows the differences between these approaches, and attempts to present how, notwithstanding the harsh opposition of Ramak and Ari, ideas from Sefer haTemunah continued to be influential among Eastern European kabbalists.

From Byzantium to Eastern Europe: The Textual Variants of Sefer Ha-Temuna and Its Circulation in ... more From Byzantium to Eastern Europe: The Textual Variants of Sefer Ha-Temuna and Its Circulation in Manuscripts and Printed Editions
The anonymous kabbalistic work Sefer Ha-Temuna deeply influenced kabbalists from the mid-fifteenth century onwards. This was mainly due to its historical perception, expressed in its radical and sophisticated teachings regarding the cosmic cycles (Shemittot). This article examines the significance of the work, the demand for it and its study throughout various periods. It attempts to trace its dissemination through numerous manuscripts and presents a numerical and statistical analysis of the textual traditions according to different geo-cultural regions of the Jewish diaspora. In addition, it portrays for the first time the main textual variants of Sefer Ha-Temuna, based on an examination of the 79 extant manuscripts. A comprehensive study of the earliest manuscripts of Sefer Ha-Temuna sheds new light on the composition place. An analysis of the data reveals the characteristics of each textual variant and various reasons for the work’s popularity in certain areas. The data, which encompasses manuscripts written over the course of four hundred years, beginning with the earliest extant manuscript (dated to 1390) and ending with the latest one, written in early nineteenth century, clearly demonstrates the works copying centers shift, from Byzantium and Italy to Eastern Europe.
As was noted, Sefer Ha-Temuna includes the most radical and sophisticated teaching versions of cosmic cycles (Shemittot), which was developed mainly among Nachmanides followers, according to their writings. This article discusses some of the radical theological implications of Sefer Ha-Temuna's teachings, and the criticism it faced, expressed by Safed's prominent kabbalists – Rabbi Moshe Cordovero and Rabbi Isaac Luria (Ha’ari). In addition, it discusses the critics influence on the later number of copies of the work, and its reflection in the distribution of Safed's secret traditions and its reception.

My work demonstrates, Avraham Nissan Ziss Segal of Lvov ability to reduce the cost of printing books through simple technological innovation, and his collaborations with the Polish printing presses. As a result of his activity, two books of Hasidic homiletical works achieved an especially widespread distribution following an absence from the book market which had lasted for a number of decades.
In my presentation I will trace the marketing models of three works of homiletic literature, which were among the most frequently published books during the nineteenth century: "Ye'arot devash" by Rabbi Yonatan Eybeschutz, "Noam Elimelekh" by Rabbi Elimelekh of Lizhensk and "Arvei Nahal" by Rabbi David Shlomo Eybeschutz. A survey of the number of editions, printing houses, the managing editors and the geographical regions, in which the books were published, offers significant insights for the study of the book behavior in the book- market. It reveals that some of the titles maintained a continuous pace of publication throughout the nineteenth century, and in the course of this article I endeavor to characterize the reasons for this. At the same time, some titles succeeded in penetrating the book-market, due to the creative thinking of the managing editors. Moreover the data collected enable us to determine the moment at which the mass printing of a certain work began. In this way, we can describe the technological development of the printing houses in Lwow, with the cancellation of the Austrian censorship, and the interesting cooperation it brought between Jewish entrepreneurs and Polish printing presses.

Rabbi Menahem Recanati and his literary corpus are considered among the most important sources fo... more Rabbi Menahem Recanati and his literary corpus are considered among the most important sources for understanding the formation of the Zohar. Recent scholarship has noted Recanati’s influence upon various Kabbalists active in the generations after the Zohar, such as R. Joseph Gikallia, and even those that wrote parts of it, such as the anonymous author of the Tikkunim and Ra’ya Mehemna. The fact the Recanati quotes from the Zohar as it lay before him, Midrash ha-Ne’elam and the Idra Rabba, make his writings a valuable witness to the text of the Zohar and a window for understanding the ways in which the work was redacted.
In the present article I seek to demonstrate that a Kabbalistic passage by R. Menahem Recanati was written by Kabbalists who had studied Recanati’s words and then proceeded to compose a Zoharic passage based upon them. This passage, which appears in Parashat Shelah, was redacted and inserted into the Zohar amidst a section that deals with an entirely different subject. I give a number of reasons to support my claim that Recanati was the source of this Zoharic passage, and not the opposite, as is often the case. One of the reasons is the way in which the passage relates to the biblical story of the Jewish people in Rephidim. Here we find a disagreement amongst the Kabbalists, and it seems that the author of the Zohar in Shelah endorses Recanati’s unique interpretation. I also provide additional philological case studies that confirm the connection between Recanati’s interpretation and that of the Zoharic passage, in addition to the structural and conceptual affinities. The integration of Recanati’s writings into the Zohar itself has been overlooked by scholarship. This example has much to teach us about the ways in which Kabbalists of the fourteenth century and beyond were influenced by the writings of their predecessors, employing the language and literary conventions of Zoharic interpretation.

Furthermore, we must try to determine when various, different, new, and unique forms of the homiletical structure and rhetoric began to develop. It is important to emphasize that I do not intend today to examine central ideological topics appearing in the homiletical literature and compare them to earlier sources. Mendel Piekarz and other scholars have already done so, although without doubt much work is still needed in order to understand the world within which Hasidism flourished. Rather, today I will analyze only the rhetoric: the structure of the homily and its social and cultural role, the relationship between the rabbi, tzaddik, preacher, on the one hand, and the public that he sought to influence, on the other.

As a focal component of Jewish culture, Kabbalah received representation in the region’s literature, sermons, custom, and art. Spanning the period from the generation of Rabbi Jacob Pollak of Krakow, the forefather of the Polish yeshivot, to the nineteenth century, this lecture seeks to identify the varied influences on, and the different trends in, the development of Kabbalah in Galicia.

The relationship between Jews and gentiles in Eastern Europe were described in this research mainly from an economic and political viewpoint, but did not deal with relations with non-Jews with regards thought literature in general, or Kabbalistic literature in particular, that which designs the way in which a Jew understands his gentile neighbour, not only in a financial sense, but in a religious one as well. During the lecture, I presented the variety of Kabbalistic literature available to Rabbi David Shlomo Eibeshitz during the period when he was a relatively young student, and how he was exposed to the Kabbalah literature of the Ari mainly after the printing of Etz Haim in Koretz 1882. From the data I presented, it is possible to understand how difficult it is to obtain a manuscript of the basic books in the Ari collection, such as Etz Haim, also to an excellent student such as Rabbi David Shlomo Eibeshitz, who was close to Kabbalists from the Hasidic circles.

This article presents a first attempt to classify and present a group of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Hasidic texts as belonging to a specific literary genre: rationales for the commandments. In this category we include Sefer Toldot Ya‘akov Yosef, by Ya‘akov Yosef of Pollonye; Sefer derekh pikudekhah, by Tsvi Elimelekh of Dinov; Sefer otsar ha-hayim, by Yitshak Eizik Yehiel Safrin; Likute halakhot, by Nathan Sternharts of Nemirov; Derekh mitsvotekhah, by Menachem Mendel Schneerson; and, finally, Sefer be’erat Miriam, by Avraham Abele Kanarfogel.

This article is a product of my work as a postdoctoral researcher in the Ludmer International Project on the Jewish Heritage of Galicia and Bukovina, University of Haifa, and was written with the support of the Jewish Galicia and Bukovina Organization. This research was also supported by the Leonid Nevzlin Research Center for Russian and Eastern European Jewry at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. I would like to thank Prof. Zeev Gries, Dr. Yoed Kadary, and Mr. Avinoam Stilman for reading a draft of the article and adding their important comments. The article is an expanded and revised version of an article published in Hebrew: “Two Historical Conceptions in Kabbalah: Between Safed and Byzantine Kabbalah,” Judaica Petropolitana 11 (2019): 73–86.

The present study wishes to examine various issues which arise from an analysis of Rabbi Rabbi Moshe's work: Saraf Pri Etz Haim (SPE"C). This book is a revised and unique edition of Rabbi Meir Popers (RM"P) renowned book, Pri Etz Haim (PE"C). It provides an insight into some of the characteristics of the study of Lurianic Kabbalahin in early Hasidism. SPE"C was originally written by Rabbi Moshe as a new independent book, rather than as a commentary or a revised edition of the PE"C. He began writing it when he was a mature scholar, and finished age 63 years.
The book was, apparently, targeting scholars versed in Kabbalah, able to follow his comparison and integration of sources derived from the vast Lurianic literature. It is likely that the book served as a guide for outstanding students of Kabblah and not as a popular book of "kavanot" (intentions for prayer), and "hanhagot" (conducts)) for the general public.
The present research concentrate’s on one work, in an attempt to characterize it from a literary and conceptual perspective. It was done through a comparison to similar works from its immediate intellectual environment, and in particular, the teachings of Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Zlotshov, Rabbi Shabbtai of Rashkov and some later Hasidic writers.
Our study cover's in particular the following topics:
A. The Method Of Editing And Its Significance: The fact that Rabbi Moshe Shoham, a close student of the Besht, part of the first generation of Hasidism, prepared a revised new edition of the PE"C shortly after it was first printed in Koretz 1785 forces us to ask what was the purpose of his new edition of the book, and what may it teach us concerning his way with the study of Kabbalah?
B. An analysis of the work shows that Rabbi Moshe put the sections of his book in a logical order, beginning with conceptual parts, followed by discussion of essential matters, all of which introducing later practice and technique conducting certain customs. The book is arranged, however, close to the daily schedule of the Kabbalist, but without the characteristics of a Kabbalistic prayer books, or practical "kavanah" books. This arrangement is an attempt to introduce general ideas prior to the practical study, for the student of Lurianic Kabbalah. The order of the book convince us that the book was certainly not intended for the dissemination of Kabbalistic ideas between the masses.
More over, Rabbi Moshe’s book offers a textual criticism of the PE"C, through an observation of the different Lurianic traditions and rulings, using manuscripts and printed reliable sources. This comparative study wishes to create a unified structure of "kavanot" leading for a harmonious view of Lurianic customs and a deepening of the religious experience of the Kabbalist.
C. Rabbi Moshe's Library, As Quoted in His Book: A person's library may serve as a mirror reflecting his social-cultural stature. Rabbi Moshe's use of the Kabbalistic books at his disposal, testifies for a hierarchal classification of different books, based on his perception of their presentation of accurate Kabbalist tradition. In this respect the books Etz Haim and Mevo Sharim, edited by Rabbi Haim Vital and his son Shmuel stand at the head of the pyramid, forming the foundation of the Lurianic teachings. From these, grow the branches - the reasons for the Mitzvot (commandments) and the compilations of the Torah, as well as the fruits, or the Pri Etz Haim. The book Pardess Rimonim by Rabbi Moshe Kordovero (RaMa"K), is thus considered by Rabbi Moshe, as by other Lurianic Kabbalists a non-authoritative book. Similarly Rabbi Moshe viewed Rabbi Joseph Irgas,”Shomer Emunim” and the "Mishnat Hasidism" by Rabbi Emmanuel Hai Riqi, which attempted to explain the teaching of Lurianic Kabbalah, contrary to the teachings found in the Vital’s family books, above mentioned In later Hasidism we find the study of Lurianic kabbalah established by his followers: Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Zidichov, Rabbi Yitzhak Izak Yechiel Yehuda Saphrin of Komarno, and Rabbi Tzaddok Hacohen of Lublin. On the other hand there were still various circles of Hasidim, which were stimulated by the Kabbalah of RaMa"K, the books of Rabbi Joseph Irigas and Mishnat Hassidim by Hai Riqi, to express their ideas, interpreting these sources.
D. Dissonance and Renewal In Kabbalah: The debate on the stature of Lurianic Kabbalah is considered by some scholar to be the basis for the polemic between Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Ladi (RS"Z) and the Gaon Rabbi Eliyahu Of Vilna. Our study of the writings of Rabbi Moshe – SPE"C and 'Devrei Moshe' – shows that the assumption that Hasidim sanctified each and every Lurianic tradition, contrary to the Mitnagdim is wrong. Rabbi Moshe does not hesitate to directly disagree with the words of the AR"I or with those of his student, Rabbi Haim Vital, attempting to change the techniques of "kavanah" and to offer alternative explanations. It seems that he sees himself as someone who is taking part in the Lurianic enterprise, which he views as dynamic and regenerating, albeit within certain limits.
These approaches of Kabbalah study were also expressed in other Hassidic circles in the first generation of Hasidism, in the circles of the Besht as well as in later generations. It would appear that one can discern from this, that there were additional undercurrents in Hasidism, in which the status of the Kabbalah of the AR"I, in its conceptual and practical aspects, occupied a different place from the one generally accepted in the common research of the relationship between the Lurianic Kabbalah and Hasidism.
