The Médiathèque de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine has in its collection more than 3,700 copies of wall paintings of which 80 represent the celebrated Romanesque paintings at Saint-Savin-sur-Gartempe. The abbey’s painted decoration was not only one of the most copied works in the collection, but also one of the earliest. The first, experimental campaign of watercolour copies was carried out in 1840 by the service of the Monuments historiques, encouraged by the Art et Monuments committee, and was followed by others as painted decoration was gradually discovered during later restorations. The historical presentation of theses campaigns during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries illustrates the establishment and evolution of the administration’s policy for conservation of medieval painted decoration in France and demonstrates the interest of these utilitarian artworks, which guard the memory of the history of wall painting.
