Thanksgiving Weather In Clarendon Will Shock You

Get ready for a Thanksgiving that will have you huddling indoors.

ARLINGTON, VA -- While it looks like snow is no longer in the forecast, you'll get quite the cold shock if you step outside this Thanksgiving evening in Arlington.

Temperatures are expected to plunge to a bone-chilling low of 31 degrees Thursday, and 30 degrees Wednesday night. Friday and Saturday will be a bit milder, but temps should drop down to 31 degrees again on Sunday, according to the forecast. That's well below normal for this time of year.

We would get snow soon, if there were any moisture at all in the forecast. While temperatures are going to dip close to or below freezing for the foreseeable future, the likelihood of precipitation doesn't rise above 20 percent for any day through Dec. 6, according to the Weather.com forecast.

While it's going to be a chilly Thanksgiving, it won't come close to a record. The coldest it's ever gotten in recorded history in the D.C. area is 19 degrees in 1903, while the warmest is 77 degrees just 10 years ago.

It'll definitely be colder than normal for Thanksgiving, however, as the average low ranges from 37 to 39 degrees, with the high in the 53- to 55-degree range.

Snowfall on Thanksgiving is exceedingly rare in D.C. The most snow we've ever seen on Turkey day is 1.9 inches on 1989, followed by 1 inch in 1971 and 0.6 inches in 1912. In 1901, we only got 0.2 inches of snow on Thanksgiving, and yet that's still good enough for fifth on the list.

The reality is, we just aren't likely to see snow in the D.C. area in November or even December, as White Christmases are also pretty rare. However, this year you can expect a snowy January, as the region is expected to get more white stuff than average this winter and January will be by far the coldest month.
