The condition is the impact of its position on Sumbawa Island, which is flanked by two earthquake fault lines. Urban resilience is related to the region’s ability to maintain its form, function, and system in the event of a natural disaster. This paper discusses how local seismic culture in Bima can create urban resilience, so it becomes a sustainable disaster-responsive district. This study aims to identify the existence of local seismic culture to increase regional resilience in the context of disaster mitigation. A case study was done by collecting data through field observations and secondary data from the Statistics of Bima Regency. Local seismic culture already exists and is practiced by the local people of Bima to build their dwellings to be adaptive and responsive when an earthquake strikes. It becomes an internal strength in developing the region’s resilience. The local seismic culture can be a model fo...

Field observations were used to observe the system, form, and building materials. They were mainly conducted on local structural systems and construction as a critical part of the building to anticipate seismic force. The connections between post and beam and the logic of structural loading interpretation are carried out. The research found some unique detail and system to respond to the seismic load. The local technique of pa’a and ceko, which developed empirically by communities during centuries can reduce the vulnerability of their houses.. Thus, an exploration on the spatial functionality of traditional houses could show how cultural gender rules and roles generate the spatial arrangements. This empirical research explored the traditional houses in two kampongs: Tarung and Ratenggaro of West Sumba, Indonesia, which spaces are divided into two distinct spaces: male’s space and female’s space, each with its own entrance. This firm division leads to the questions on its relation with the traditional gender roles are represented inside the house. Interestingly, the spatial arrangement is not intended to create separation between men and women inside the house or to pose that the status and roles of men are higher than those of women. The research found that the space separation actually is a manifestation of the dynamic roles of male and female members o...

One example of how a more anthropological approach to the design and planning of the built environment requires a better understanding is the study of the living culture of indigenous communities. Unsurprisingly, an ethnographic approach is critical to studying these communities' architecture and living culture in Indonesia. This study aims to outline the main principles of the ethnographic approach and review the implementation of these principles in previous studies on the vernacular architecture of indigenous communities in Indonesia. A comparative analysis of four case studies shows that each study has implemented the approach's main principles contextually. The results showed that the four case studies utilized observation and interviews to collect field data in slightly different terms. Although each case study...

This study aims to conduct a comparison of two different groups of people on their opinion of earthquake-resistant housing variables and actions to increase the quality of their house. For supporting public awareness of earthquake-resistant houses, the purpose also determines the latent variables of earthquake-resistant houses and actions from the public for improving the quality of the residential building. This quantitative research begins by collecting the earthquake-resistant house attributes through journal reviews. This study used a closed-ended questionnaire to collect data on public experiences of earthquake disasters. For data analysis, it used correlation analysis to determine the level of relationship between two variables and utilizes factor analysis to reduce the variable to a small number of factors. The two groups that have different experiences of earthq...
