Si usa in genere per designare i resti corporei di un defunto. L'equivalente greco è "leipsana". Da cui la nostra parola tecnica "lipsanoteca" per designare una serie di contenitori di reliquie come quella che ammiriamo oggi nella cappella di San Francesco di Geronimo al Gesù Nuovo di Napoli. Origini nelle notte dei tempi L'origine del culto rivolto a dei resti mortali umani si perde nella notte dei tempi e forse fa parte del processo stesso di umanizzazioni nell'apparire della nostra specie. Antropologi come Mircea Eliade e Julien Ries hanno visto nel seppellire i morti il primo tratto di una auto-coscienza umana del proprio limite. I riti funerari sono all'albore di ogni civiltà il luogo dove si sviluppa la capacità simbolica dell'uomo primitivo. Nascono le prime tombe e nasce la prima arte per elaborare il lutto della persona cara, ma anche per tramandarne il ricordo. Prose-guimento naturale dell'urlo e del canto di lamento, l'arte nasce forse per perpe-tuare con il defunto una sorta di comu-nione che trascenda il limite stesso della morte. Possiamo dire che studiare una lipsanoteca è studiare quel riflesso ance-strale da dove è nata l'arte stessa. Trasmissione di una potenza Antichissima è anche la convinzione in molti popoli che il contatto con i resti di un personaggio potente poteva trasmet-tere a un vivente parte della potenza del defunto. Se alcune tradizioni religiose come l'induismo escluderanno questo valore dei corpi a motivo della credenza nella reincarnazione, altre importanti tradizioni includono il culto delle reliquie fra le espressioni della loro esperienza religiosa.
