Furthermore, technological convergence is now beginning to occur in terms of integrating mobile and fixed technologies into a unified architecture for telecommunications services. The design of such a service architecture has been the focus of a number of initiatives in recent years, including TINA-C and projects under the ACTS (Advanced Communications Technologies and Services) programme of the European Commission. The paper begins by presenting a general overview of the types of architecture that are being developed to facilitate this integrated approach. The focus then moves to consider the specific issue of how mobility may be incorporated within the framework. The discussion draws upon the work of the ACTS DOLMEN (Service Machine for an Open Long-term Mobile and Fixed Network Environment) project as a means of illustrating the service architecture concept and demonstrating a way of implementing a solution to the mobility considerations. DOLMEN is responsible for the definition and validation of OSAM (Open Service Architecture for fixed and Mobile environments) and is contributing to the definitions within TINA and, via its partners, to the ITU specifications

The statutory focus, such as the UK government’s Online Safety Bill, continues with an approach that looks towards prohibition, rather than empowerment, while ignoring an evidence base that calls for inclusive approaches. Reflecting upon the impact of this policy direction related to adults, the risks associated with being online, for example grooming and exploitation (both sexual and financial), are poorly understood in multi-agency perspectives and are in conflict with the needs of individuals who might be at risk of harm online. With little formal training in adult safeguarding practice, and a dearth of research around adult online safety, professional practice falls back, instead, on personal experience, and biases arise from personal use of technology, which presents challenges to effective and consistent support of adults at risk.

The relationship between Resource Adapter, Service Node and Service Machine is examined, along with the role of RM-ODP viewpoints in the identification and development of Resource Adapters. Further analysis of design aspects is presented and implementation requirements are discussed. Finally, the paper demonstrates the relationship between Resource Adapters and the TINA Connection Management Architecture, with an example Resource Adapter being presented.

While we can show that students are comfortable engaging with digital platforms, and online learning environments are certainly to be welcomed, ad hoc and poorly defined critical digital literacy education in schools result in students frequently bringing poor critical thinking to the online environments, which can bring both pedagogic and institutional challenges for universities. Critical digital literacy, and associated risk mitigation, is not something that can be assumed with 21st-century students, and universities have a role to play in the development of these key skills in their student bodies if we are to produce digitally aware and responsible graduates.
