He takes the child to the old doll doctor to have it repaired. There he meets Violet Talmadge, who is buying a large quantity of dolls to give out on Christmas Eve to the children of the poor. Belden assists her home with them and obtains permission to call the following night to help her deliver them. The next night he calls with a sleigh and two horses, and his arms are filled with toys. They start out to deliver them. In a slum bedroom two little children are bemoaning the fact that they do not think Santa Claus will call on them this year. Just then they hear the tinkle of Belden's sleigh-bells outside and dive into bed, thinking it is Santa Claus. Belden and Violet deliver all their presents and drive home. The years pass. Belden goes to the doll shop and buys a large doll for his daughter's birthday. Upon arriving home he places the doll in the arms of his sleeping daughter. Later Belden notices the attention his wife receives from a young physician and resents it. Matters finally culminate when his wife comes home late one night in the doctor's car, after having sat up with a little sick child in the slums. Belden misconstrues the situation and orders her to go back to her lover. Violet takes her child and passes from his life. As time passes Belden is haunted by visions of his wife and daughter in want. He is unable to eat, as he thinks of this and at last in desperation he wanders out. He walks along with no idea as to where he is going, and when he looks up, he finds himself in front of the old doll doctor's shop. With nothing else to do, he goes in and is welcomed by the old man. Then he wanders aimlessly around, looking at the different toys. Presently his attention is centered on a doll with its head off. The old doll doctor remembers his work and takes up the doll to fix it. Belden asks him who the doll belongs to. The doll doctor reveals the name of the owners, and says that he expects them to call for it in a few moments. Belden hides behind some toys and watches his wife and daughter when they come in. The daughter is given her doll and wanders over to where Belden is hidden. When Violet looks around for her child, she finds her in the arms of her husband. She reaches out to take the child away from him, but the child's arms only cling tighter to her father. Belden asks Violet to forgive him. Right or wrong, he wants her back. He stretches out his arms and encompasses his wife, the child and the doll. Written by
