Later, in 1964, Edwin August, a young southerner, joins the Confederate forces. Edwin leaves behind his mother, his sweetheart and his brother Frank. During an engagement, the Confederates run short of ammunition. Edwin reports this condition to the Confederate commander, who sends an orderly with Edwin to deliver dispatches to outlying posts asking for more ammunition. The orderly falls into the hands of the Yankees and is taken to the Union headquarters, while Edwin succeeds in getting through the lines. The Union commander reads the dispatch requesting help, found on the captured orderly. He sends a detachment to light fires around the Confederates and burn down the bridge, their supply route. In the Confederate outposts these fires are seen as the ammunition is about to be dispatched. The regular gun carriage driver refuses to run the risk of driving powder through the flames. Edwin volunteers to undertake the perilous feat. He mounts the carriage and makes a dash for the bridge, succeeding in crossing just before it falls. Later, he and a troop of Confederates are returning to camp when they come upon a Union foraging party. The Confederates surprise the Yankees, and in the skirmish, Ward, the Union soldier, and Edwin, the Confederate, become separated from their respective commands. As the Yankees escape in the woods, the two meet and in a hand-to-hand fight Ward is killed. Edwin escaping just as he is discovered by the retreating Yankees. Edwin flees into the nearest house and asks the woman within, Ward's wife, to help him. She secretes him in the fireplace and denies having seen him when the Yankees arrive. They give up the search and with Ward's body return to the house. Several soldiers have been left on the porch, and Edwin has remained hidden in the fireplace. They bring in Ward's body. His wife is heartbroken and hysterical. As they leave, they tell her the man they were looking for was the man who killed her husband. Edwin comes out and learns that it was the husband of his savior whom he killed. The wife blamed him, but he tells her the situation and she understands. Edwin leaves her with the body and returns to his command. The war has ended and Edwin goes back to his home, where a joyful reunion takes place, while Ward's wife and child sorrow for the husband who gave up his life for the cause of his country. Written by
