The girl does not object to the lieutenant, but is inclined to favor Ben Roderick, the leader of Engine Company No. 1 of the N. T. Volunteer Fire Company. Responding with patriotic zeal to the North's call for volunteers, Ben and a dozen of his comrades enlist and join the regiment of "Zouaves." They are subjected to great ridicule at first because of their odd uniforms, and Hayes misses no opportunity to discredit Ben. Nevertheless the Zouaves faithfully practice their athletic drills. Time passes and Ben and his men distinguish themselves on the field of battle. The fireman is promoted to a commission. At this time Lieutenant Hayes, who is camping with a detachment of his regiment in Northern Virginia, invites Mr. Minton and Roxana to visit the camp. Minton and his daughter arrive, but only to fall into a terrible catastrophe. They have only been encamped a short time when the Confederates attack, and Roxana takes refuge in a nearby house. A fierce battle is waged and the house is set on fire. The skill of the Zouaves now asserts itself, and in one of their spectacular formations Ben is lifted to the window, dashes through the flames and rescues the girl. He immediately joins his men and makes a strategic attack on the enemy. This double feat of heroism not only brings to the young man the esteem of all, but also a badge of honor and the hand of the beautiful Roxana. Written by Moving Picture World synopsis See less
