Blockades, boycotts of Shell tankers, and mass protests not only forced Shell to adopt a genuinely environmentally sound solution (dismantling the platform on land), but also compelled the countries of the Northeast Atlantic to reach an agreement that no old platforms would be sunk in the region again.
