On her birthday, Jabbs, another suitor for Ethel's hand, appears at the home of his beloved with a large bouquet of flowers. Pokes, in the meantime, has invested his entire capital of $1 for a piano, to be paid for on the installment plan of $1 per week. When the piano is installed, to the disgust of Jabbs, who seeks to avenge himself his hated rival. The smoke issuing from the chimney of Ethel's home gives Jabbs an idea of how he can secure his revenge, and immediately he begins upon his nefarious scheme. By sitting upon the chimney he succeeds in forcing the smoke back into the parlor of the house. Here Pokes and Ethel are spooning, while Ethel's mother is executing some harmonious selections on the piano. When the smoke fills up the room Pokes' first thought is to save Ethel, while the mother rushes for help. However, the awful thought of paying $1 a week for the rest of his life for a piano that is about to be lost decides Pokes' conduct, so he forgets Ethel, thinking only of his beloved piano. Dropping Ethel on the couch, Pokes drags the piano outside, when Jabbs from the roof above begins to spill water down on top of the piano. Pokes covers up the piano to protect it, but more trouble comes to him when the mother returns accompanied by two white wings armed with a street cleaning hose. Acting under the instructions of the revengeful Jabbs, the white wings turn the hose upon Pokes and his piano and sweep them down the street, over the dock and into the river.
