Mary's city cousin Ethel attends the function and strenuously flirts with her cousin's fiancé. Mary later sees her sweetheart kiss Ethel. She bitterly reproaches Robert and breaks their engagement. At Ethel's instigation, the young doctor moves to the city, where he builds up a successful practice. A year later, Mary hears that Robert and Ethel have been married and has an attack of brain-fever. During her illness, she becomes deeply attached to her nurse and ponders nursing as a career. When she recovers she goes to the city and enters a hospital. As time passes, Robert is unhappy, even after his daughter Helen is born: Ethel is flighty and shallow, and her extravagance keeps him in perpetual debt. Shortly afterward, Ethel is killed in an automobile accident and Robert showers his affections on Helen. Years later, Helen becomes seriously ill; Robert sends for a nurse and Mary is assigned to the case. The discovery that Robert's child needs her help startles Mary; the sight of her brings back the doctor's love for his former sweetheart, but she turns a deaf ear to Robert's avowals; she is there to nurse the child, and Helen's love for her aids greatly in saving the child's life. Upon Helen's recovery, Mary departs, leaving Robert heartbroken. The following night, Mary receives a message that Helen has had a relapse, and she hastens to the little sufferer's side. Through the long night she and Robert fight for Helen's life. When morning dawns, all danger has passed. Realizing his great need of her, Mary consents to be Robert's wife.
