This is the operating instruction for all AKAS models (AKAS-I [before AKAS],
AKAS-LC,and AKAS-II.
Special instructions for each model are provided with its individual model marking.
Attention is drawn to all safety instructions by this symbol. Particular attention must be paid to such instructions.
These operating instructions provide to the user important information concerning the correct use of the AKAS
Read the operating instructions with switching unit LSUW N1 Muting K. These instructions are a component of the light barrier concerned. It is
essential that they are easily available at the location where the safety light barrier is installed.
All requirements detailed in these operating instructions must be observed.
Other relevant regulations and the requirements of the employers' liability insurance associations have also to
be complied with.
Before the initial operation of the AKAS, the operating instructions must be read.
Qualified persons Mounting, initial operation and maintenance may only be performed by qualified persons.
Safety warning Light barriers do not protect anybody from machine-caused flying objects.
The AKAS protects fingers and hands that hold the sheet during the operation. Therefore it does not protect
during any fast engagement between the bending punch and the matrix short time before those are
closed. The protection function of the system is canceld when the Muting lamp is on.
The front beam which is turned to the operator does not protect, if the box-bending function has been
activated earlier.
When using the switching unit LSUW N1 Muting K, the main voltage must be switched off prior to the removing
of the switching unit. There are voltage conducting parts in the base and in the terminal strip of the switching
A-Test: unit.
putting into operation
TEST
The setting must be done in a way that the following test will be passed:
- The B-Test must be done for safety each 5 times on the left end and on the right end of the upper tool.
- The press brake must be equipped complete with the heaviest upper tool.
- Start of the closing movement from the maximum top dead centre (T.D.C)

Electrosensitive protective The press brake protection AKAS is an electrosensitive protective device (ESPE).
equipement ESPE is characterised by the fact that a hazardous motion becomes interrupted or prevented if the light beams
produced between the transmitter and receiver unit are interrupted.
Safety category 4 The AKAS fulfils the safety category 4, in compliance with EN 954.
Devices of safety category 4 are self-monitoring electrosensitive protective devices (ESPE) and represent the
highest safety class among the ESPE
Self-monitoring The electrosensitive protective device (ESPE) switches automatically into the "safe state" when it is faulty.
Standard Installation range Maximum distance between transmitter and receiver is 6 m ( For longer range please get in contact with
Fiessler Elektronik or your local dealer).
Overrun The part of the hazardous motion still taking place after interrupting the light beam.
Overrun traverse The distance covered during the overrun (e.g. by the ram of a press).
Response time The time that elapsed after light beam interruption until the switching action occurs.
Valve or contactor control Before every release of the output contacts the contactor control is checking whether the switching elements
connected (relays, contactors or valves) have been released. A renewed release of the
output contacts is only possible if the switching elements connected have been released. Thus a dangerous fai-
lure of switching-elements (relays, contactors or valves) caused by the hazardous motion is prevented.
Start interlock After initial operation or after a power supply interruption a renewed "enabling" is blocked by the start inter-
lock. The renewed release of the switching unit is only possible by closing and opening of the start entry.
Restart interlock The restart interlock prevents any automatic releasing of the switching outputs after an interruption and
re-enabling of the light beam (e.g. when penetrating the light beam).
Muting Short-time safe by-pass of the press brake protection AKAS during material movement, i.e. during a plate ben-
ding process.
- The hazardous state of a machine must be ended by using the sensor function.
- The safety level (class 4) of the accident preventing light barrier should at least correspond to the safety level
of the control system of the machine.
- The overrun traverse including the response time of 25 ms must be less than 15 mm for AKAS-I and
AKAS-LC and than 14 mm for AKAS-II. The overrun traverse with AKAS is normally considerably shorter
than with Two-Hands Control, because the AKAS controls directly the valves.
- The pressbrake must have an automatic overrun-control for the first stroke. If not, Fiessler Elektronik offer the
system AMS.
- Laser beams may be deviated due to air currents, this may cause unwanted and unforeseen machine
stops. Therefore the machine must be erected at a place free of air currents.
- Acceptance test:
the installation acceptance test and inspections should be conducted by a competent person in possession
of all the information supplied by the manufacturer of the machine and the ESPE.
- Annual test:
The operator should ensure that a competent person is assigned to check the light barrier annually. This person
can be an employee either from the light-barrier manufacturer or from the operator's staff. The annual test shall be
fullfilled according the inspection sheet from page 43.
Upon customer's request, Fiessler Electronik will perform the initial acceptance as well as the annual test. Additio-
nally, customer training seminars on how to execute annual tests will be conducted at regular intervals.
Required signals Two muting signals must be supplied by the valve position control of the valve which is responsible for the slow
speed.
Alternative the AMS-system from Fiessler Elektronik can be used.
2 Muting contacts: potential free, may be closed only at a stroke speed 10 mm/s
and
23 mm before the bending punch meets the sheet metal (AKAS-I, AKAS-LC)
resp.
13 - 22 mm (depending of the overrun traverse of the press brake) before the bending
punch meets the sheet metal (AKAS-II)
till the end of the stroke.
It must comply with safety category 4 (EN 954).
2 normally closed contacts:potential free and forcible guided , only open during upward movement.
Muting lamp : max. 230V 60W min 24 V AC or DC min. 0,1A - max. 0,5 A .
Both muting signals must be connected by separate cables in order to exclude any short circuit, or the
layout of cables must be effected in a way that no mechanical damage of the cable may occur, thus
excluding any short circuit of the lead of the cable.
Caution !
If the muting lamp is not connected or defective, a short-out (=muting) is not possible.
Use only tools of equal overall height which have the same bending line in the same fixing.
(also look at chap. 6.1 mounting conditions).

E L E K T R O N I K General instructions 4.1
The laser - accident preventing light barrier AKAS is an electro sensitive protective and controlling device
(ESPE) which has the function to protect operators from accidents.
This happens as follows : Before a part of the body is squeezed between two opposed moving machine parts,
this part of the body interrupts at least one light beam. By this means the movement of the machine is stopped,
before it comes to an injury.
AKAS
- meets IEC 1496, Type 4
- is self- monitoring without additionally wiring.
- easy to adjust after tool changing.
Operative range for the laser-accident preventing light barrier of the AKAS types are:
press brakes
In addition to the AKAS-I and AKAS-II with the electromotor driven supports for transmitter
and receiver for fast and easy tool change, the use of the AKAS -LC is recommended if the
press is operated using tools of equal heights or in case if extended operation with the same
tool is required, therefore no re-adjusting to different tool sizes is necessary. Fig.7/ 1

Principle of function The press brakes system AKAS-II is a laser-optical safety device. The system is combined securely with the ram.
If the ram moves, the system AKAS will move also with the ram (Fig. 7/2-7/4). The laser opical safety is fixed un-
derneath the ram Thereby the area underneath the ram is protected. (On upstriking presses, the AKAS is also
mounted at the ram.) If one of the beams is interrupted (Fig. 10/1), the system AKAS will switch off the movement
of the machine by the switching unit.

E L E K T R O N I K Function description of transmitter and receiver 4.3
Description of box-bending If a box is bent, the previously bent side part of the box interrupts the light
or bending beam of the receiver element E1 right before this one will be muted by the
deaktiviert
of smallest workpieces muting order of the machine. The hazardous motion is interrupted, although
there is no part of the body in the dangerous area. To prevent this, the ope-
E1
rating mode "box-bending" must be announced to the system by operating
the "box-bending" button before bending a box. When releasing the button
the box-bending demand will be activated and the receiver element E1 gets E4
muted and deactivated. This condition is shown by two green LEDs at the E3
front plate of the receiver. However, the interruption of the light beam of E1 E2
by the walls of the box does not lead to a switching off of the downward mo-
vement (Fig. 11/2.2). The receiver elements E2, E3 and E4 (E4 only for Box side wall
AKAS-I, -LC) remain active until the muting signal mutes the receiver ele-
ments E1 and E2 and after 1,4 sec (AKAS-I, -LC) resp. 0,6 sec
(AKAS-II) the switching unit mutes the whole receiver. After the bending
process the function of box-bending (muting of E1) will be cancelled. bending line
Fig.11/ 1
With smallest pieces which must be led by the fingers for bending, the
function of box-bending must be selected, as otherwise the fingers would interrupt E1 and would lead to
the switching off of the bending process !
With activated function of box-bending the finger is not detected as shown in Fig. 9/2, 9/3 page 9!

Pointer The light beams of the AKAS must be located in a certain distance to the ram. (For that see also chapter 6.5,
"adjustment instructions after changing the tool."). (Caution! Only tools of equal overall height may be used in one
fixing).
For using upper tools with different construction high transmitter and receiver of AKAS-I and AKAS-II are
mounted on electromotor driven supports. So an easy adjustment on the different tools is possible. (see Fig.

E L E K T R O N I K Mounting conditions 6.1
General instruction 6.1.1
Max. allowable overrun By the operation of the machine with AKAS, there must be an automatic monitoring device of the overrun tra-
traverse of the machine verse.
To achieve the shortest overrun traverse the contacts 16-17 and 20-21 must be connected as close as possible to
the valves which are responsible for the downward movement This enables a considerably shorter overrun traver-
se with AKAS than with the 2 hands-control system.
Before the initial start-up the overrun traverse must be checked either with a test piece (see page 4) or by
a measuring instrument of overrun traverse *.
If the results of 10 carried out measurements pass over 15mm (AKAS-I, -LC) resp. 14mm (AKAS-II) the
fast speed must be reduced.
*) On request, the company Fiessler Elektronik is prepared to perform measurements of overrun with
your machine.

Muting signal If a light beam is interrupted by the sheet which is to be bent, the AKAS would stop the working stroke immedi-
ately. Therefore the AKAS must be muted before it gets interrupted by the sheet. Likewise, slightly uneven
sheets should not lead either to an unintended switching-off of the cutting movement. From an opening
of < 23 mm (AKAS-I, -LC)
resp.
from an opening corresponding to the recommended change over from fast speed to work speed (s. Fig. 21/2)
(AKAS-II)
there must be sent a muting signal to the receiver by the control system of the machine.
Then the control system of the machine must guarantee according to safety category 4, that from this ti-
me the stroke speed is < 10 mm/s.
The Muting lamp must be connected, otherwise a muting of the AKAS system is not possible !
The protection of a pressbrake by the AKAS does not permit a bending in the bottom of a box inside
one box in fast motion.
On press brake equipped with AKAS protection only tools of equal height may be used in one fixing.
All tools fixed together may have only one common bending line.
Stoppers, which are mounted at the matrix, lead to a premature switching-off of the downward
movement.
Fig.22/ 1 Fig.22/ 2
- if the machine is only run in the work speed, i.e. no more than 10mm/s
- if the overrun traverse of the machine comes to more than 15mm (AKAS-I, -LC)
resp. 14mm (AKAS-II) .
At cause of the missing sychronization during fast speed, AKAS cannot be used for two machines
aligned in parallel (e.g. "tandem press brake") .

Now, the operator may choose from 2 different adjustment modes:
The automated adjustment procedure can be interrupted, if - during the downward movement of both the
AKAS-transmitter and the AKAS-receiver - the switch "Sender auf" (=transmitter up) is activated. (This
action will be of help primarily in the case of a large tool being exchanged by a considerably smaller tool.) By do-
ing this, the downward movement of the transmitter and receiver towards the lowest point is prevented or stopp-
ped. If the transmitting light beam hits the receiver elements, i.e. the optics of both components are "locked into
one another" (focussing), the AKAS-II system will adjust itself automatically onto the exchanged tool newly fi-
xed at the ram. If the light beam from the transmitter does not hit the receiver (i.e. the transmitter beams are in-
terrupted by the newly mounted tool), both transmitter and receiver will move downward to the lowest point of
the displacing range. When moving upwards again, they are searching the lower edge of the bending punch.
The system will automatically adjust itself to the newly installed bending punch.
After having carried out this, the key at the key-operated switch is turned to "Aus" (=OFF) and the key is re-
moved from its lock. (fig. 30/4). After having completed the adjustment procedure, the tests (see page 4)
must be carried out.

Switching functions 2 potential-free,monitored,with positively driven normally open contacts (16-17), (20-21).
Load capacitance non-inductive. In the event of an inductive load a spark-quench must be connected parallel to the load
( e.g. 0,22 F, 220 ).
Short circuit strength with positively driven contacts protected by 3,15 A semi-delayed action fuse
Cable insulation Cable insulation from all connected devices of 230 V - version must be dimensioned for the rated voltage of
250 V.

The use of the AKAS receiver is only permitted in combination with the switching unit LSUW N1 Muting or
with a safety-PLC with a EC type-examination proofed software module (e.g. PSS 3XXX with SB 230 from Pilz).
Only if the accident preventing light barrier AKAS has been connected according to the circuit diagram detailed
below, and if all relevant national and international accident prevention/safety regulations are observed , a safe
operation is ensured !
Any modification of the specified circuits can cause hazardous states and is therefore forbidden.
For press brakes driven by a safe PLC Type PSS 3XXX (Pilz) you can use AKAS in combination with the
safety module SB230 (Pilz) and without the Switching unit LSUW N1 Muting K.
Also you have to make sure that the prerequisites for using the press brakes protection AKAS (see chapter 3)
are full filled.
By the use of the AMS-system a safe integration of AKAS is possible, if the press brake is not equipped with
position controlled valves for the change-over from fast speed to work speed or an automatic overrun control for
the first stroke.
Muting lamp, starter (wiping relay), two canal Muting demand and contactor (if necessary) has to be
connected according the wiring diagram! Otherwise a safe function is not guarantied!

sheet Matrix
Fig.33/1
During the working stroke (3), (4), (5) the press brake protection AKAS gets forcibly interrupted by the sheet
and the matrix.
In order to exclude any interruption of the working stroke by the AKAS, the switching-off function of the AKAS
must be muted
AKAS -I, AKAS-LC: 23 mm
resp.
AKAS-II: 13 - 22 mm (depending of the overrun traverse of the press brake (s. 6.1.3 Fig. 21/2))

When a muting command is sent out by the control system of the machine, first both lower receiver elements E1
and E2 are muted.
AKAS -I, AKAS-LC: 1,4 sec
resp.
AKAS-II: 0,6 sec
later the switching unit mutes the whole receiver.
Therefore the control system of the machine must provide a contact monitored according to safety category 4,
which is closed when the machine is in the work speed, i.e. its speed is V 10 mm/s and which is opened when
the machine is in fast motion mode

Function: The AMS provides the muting signal according to safety class 4 and the control signals for the AKAS.
It measures and evaluates speed, traverse and direction of the closing and opening move-
ment of the press. Furthermore, it can carry out the overrun traverse control during the first stroke of the
machine.
The AMS is especially designed for retrofitting certain older presses that do not have any
work speed valves or position monitoring.
The AMS verifies the nature of the movement of the machine. For this purpose, there are incremental
magnetic metal tapes on the left and on the right hand side of the moving part of the press. Each of
them is scanned by a magnetic sensor.
Ram
Magnetic tapes
Magnetic tape
sensors
Machine mount
mounting: The switchgear of the AMS must be installed into a switch cabinet of the protective class IP 54. On the
ram (on presses with underneath drive it will be the bottom platen of the press) the magnetic tapes
must be fixed vertically. The length of the magnetic tapes must be as long as the maximum lift of stroke
plus 20 mm reserve at each end of both tapes.
Example: maximum stroke of the press without tool: 300mm + 2 x 20mm reserve = 340mm overall
length of the magnetic tape.
The magnetic sensors must be placed vertically on the machine mount so that the sensor surface
is placed directly above the magnetic tape with a maximum distance of 2mm to the
tape. The sensor can be fastened by using 2 screws M3 in the 3,4 mm clearance holes.

Green = channel A channels A (green) and channels B (yellow) must be switched over. On presses
Yellow = channel B with an underneath drive the wiring procedure must be installed vice-versa.
The connection of the insulation of the sensor cables at the equipotential bonding must be made at
large surface (low impedance). Sensors and their connecting cables must be laid out well separated
from other conductors that may be faulty. If necessary, additional insulating measures have to be met.
Avoid any layout of cables parallel to energy transmitting cables.

mounting of
magnetic tape:
Installation must be performed strictly parallel to the mounting surface, i.e. to the traverse to be mea-
sured. Uneven surfaces will always reduce the accuracy of measurement.
Notice: For an optimum of adhesion, all anti-adhesive substances (such as oil, grease, dust etc.) must be re-
moved by using residue-free (=evaporating) cleaners. Ketones (acetone) or alcohols like the fast cle-
aning agents available from companies like Loctite or 3M are suitable substances for this purpose.
Surfaces must be dry and adherends must be pressed against each other as tightly as possible.
Temperature of adherends will be optimal between 20 und 30 C in dry ambiance.
If the magnetic tape is mounted without its covering profile, the self-adhesive steel tape must be glued
onto the magnetic tape as a protective means against mechanical damages.
Avoid any unwanted influences of magnetic fields. In particular, all sorts of magnetic fields ( e.g.
from magnetic clamps or from similar permanent magnetic materials) must be kept away from direct
contact with the magnetic tape.

ELEKTRONIK
FIESSLER
The AMS must be connected to the same voltage as the N1 K Muting switchgear ( AMS dead
when AKAS out of operation/disconnected)
Inbetriebnahme Prior to the first starting up of the system, the desired operating mode must be programmed into the
AMS via the 2 strips of DIP-Switches that are located behind the yellow front plate ( AKAS I / LC with
AMS2 :
/ without overrun traverse measuring, i.e. AKAS II with / without overrun traverse measuring. When
using AKAS II with overrun traverse measuring, the maximum allowable overrun traverse from 5 mm
to 14 mm can be entered as option.)
You will find all available operating modes in the following table. An additional sticker showing a print
of this table is placed on the housing of the AMS2 right beside the Dip-switch strip. The yellow front
plate of the AMS2 can be removed with a small screw driver turned between the lateral edges.
X = ON Dipswitches 1 2 3 4 5 6
AKAS 1 without overrun traverse test X
AKAS 1 with max. 15 mm overrun
The Dip switch combinations on both Dip switch strips must be strictly identical at any time!
overrun traverse After the voltage reset of the AMS, an overrun traverse control is carried out during the first stroke of
the press. For this purpose, the stroke of the machine is stopped after either 20 mm or 40 mm traver-
measuring AMS 2 :
se and the AMS checks the overrun traverse. If the overrun traverse does not exceed either 15 mm
on the AKAS 1 or the pre-programmed maximum allowable overrun traverse of the AKAS 2, the mea-
sured traverse is displayed by the number of flashes by the green LED on the AMS. Example: if the
upper green LED flashes 8 times and the lower LED 6 times, the traverse measured at the right hand
sensor input would be 8mm, that at the left hand sensor would be 6mm. In turn, if the AKAS2 is
used, the maximum allowable overrun traverse can be programmed at the AMS 2 onto 8mm (with re-
serve: 9mm).
According to this, the AKAS2 receiver can now be adjusted onto 8mm/9mm as overrun traverse para-
meter. For further information about adjustsing the AKAS2, please refer to page 21 of the instruction
manual for AKASI / LC / AKASII.
If the overrun traverse is exceeded, the green LED remains dark and, after having completed the
opening movement, another overrun traverse control procedure starts during the next stroke of the
press. As long as the overrun traverse measuring does not furnish correct measuring results, no ope-
ration will be possible. For machines already equipped with an overrun traverse control, the above-
mentioned measuring procedure may be deactivated by adjusting both jumpers "6" beneath the remo-
vable type plate of the AMS switch gear.
Never operate the press with AKAS without having executed the overrun traverse control first!
-If, after the first starting up of the machine, no stroke is carried out, please check if the downward mo-
vement is always interrupted after 1cm. If this is the case, the sensor cables A and B might be con-
Notice for using nected incorrectly. (A and B mixed up).
AMS/N and AMS 2/N : -If no overrun traverse measuring is carried out, i.e. if there is no Muting activated when the overrun
control measurement is deactivated, check the distance between magnetic tape (adhesive side must
face the machine) and the sensors. If everything is installed correctly, check with a measuring tool at
the sensor cables A and B during upward / downward movement, if a constant alternation from 0 V to
approx. 24 V is produced. If 0 V is constantly obtained as measuring result, the sensors themselves
are probably defective.
Doku Nr.861 Stand28.09.2004/ SG / GF/di
In case of problems with the Muting fuction, the following spots are not recommended to be used as
upper dead center:
-From switch-over point of the machine from fast speed into slow speed until + 4 mm above the
switch-over point.
Example: if the switch-over point is e.g. 16 mm above the sheet metal surface, then avoid using the
sector between 16mm and 20 mm above shett metal surfasce as upper dead center.
-The sector of 14 mm after the switch-over point on AKAS I / LC +/- 2 mm, or 6 mm after the switch-
over point from fast speed into slow speed when using AKASII +/- 2 mm
Example: the switch-over point at the AKAS II was programmed onto 15 mm above sheet metal
surface. 15 mm - 6 mm = 9 mm +/- 2 mm => Avoid using the sector between 7mm and 11 mm as
upper dead center.
