Many customers prefer products that contain fewer toxic agents, therefore providing an environmentally friendly solution with the benefit of smaller risk to the user. Medieval and early modern medicinal knowledge might be useful when looking for natural, herbal-based components to develop modern products. Along with these considerations we created, tested, and compared an entirely natural mouthwash, named Herba Dei. Methods The manufacturing procedure was standardized, and the created tincture was evaluated by GC/MS analysis for active compounds, experimentally tested in cell-based cytotoxicity, salivary protein integrity, cell-free antioxidant activity, anti-bacterial and anti-viral assays, and compared with three market-leading mouthwashes. The analysis of synovial fluid is an important method in diagnosing and handling septic arthritis... more The analysis of synovial fluid is an important method in diagnosing and handling septic arthritis. To achieve a quick diagnosis could be a great advantage in the therapy. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) proved to be a useful technique in the differential diagnosis of tumors using blood plasma or sera. The aim of this paper is to show up some characteristic thermal parameters in the diagnosis of different grades of arthritis, which are in good agreement with the severity of disease checked by conventional X-ray supported grading. To follow the effect of different bacterial strains, the synovial fluids were inoculated by three types of bacterial strains (with 103–105 CFU mL−1 concentrations) at 37 °C and stored trough 24 h. After that, they were denatured in 20–90 °C temperature range with 0.3 K min−1 scanning rate. The change in the maximum denaturation temperature (Tm) and calorimetric enthalpy (∆H) monitored the severity of sepsis and depended on the type of bacteria. T...

Because separation of thymol, carvacrol, and linalool, components of the essential oil, was more efficient by overpressured layer chromatography (OPLC) than by conventional thin-layer chromatography (TLC), the forced flow technique was used before biological detection. All three test compounds had antibacterial effect against the phytopathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. maculicola, in bioautography, although in essential oil thymol was present in sufficient quantity to produce an inhibiting zone in the adsorbent layer. In BioArena investigations, when reduced glutathione as a formaldehyde (HCHO) capturer was dissolved in the cell suspension before bioautographic exposure to the essential oil, the characteristic inhibiting activity of thymol and carvacrol against Bacillus subtilis soil bacteria was reduced, whereas the presence of the HCHO precursors N-G-monomethyl-L-arginine or N-B-monomethyl-L-lysine enhanced their antibacterial effect. These results suggest that HCHO and its reaction products may be involved in the antibacterial activity of thymol and carvacrol.

To evaluate the potential of five Hungarian honey types against wound-associated bacteria, in vitro microbiological assays were conducted on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined with the broth macrodilution method, and biofilm degradation capacity was tested with a crystal violet assay. To understand the underlying mechanisms, the effects of honey treatments were assessed on bacterial membrane integrity and quorum sensing (QS). The highest antibacterial activity, indicated by the lowest MIC values, as well as the highest biofilm inhibition rates and membrane disruption, was displayed by chestnut and linden honeys.
