His contribution to the discussion on the interpretation of quantum mechanics is well known and studied. Little, if any, attention has been paid to his vision of the relation between physics and mathematics. This paper aims at presenting the views of the Polish physicist in this respect and attempts – as far as it is possible – to identify possible inspirations for these views.

Presented views are concerning the relation of the concepts of aether, continuity and causality in the context of revolution in physics that took place at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. The issues particularly concern his thoughts related to the old quantum theory and special relativity. In particular, this article presents the role of these concepts in the foundations of physics and – in a more general aspect – in the recognized fields of knowledge. The nature of Szyszkowski's analysis allows him to be considered a very interesting thinker in the area that today is called the philosophy of physics or, perhaps more accurately, the philosophy in science. An important observation made by Szyszkowski is emphasized that mathematical structures cannot have physical properties. Attention was also paid to the Polish intellectual community, which was formed in Kiev before ...

In the present paper, a simple way to clarify the discussion is proposed, and some new difficulties connected with the interpretation of quantum mechanics are presented.

As part of the attempts to characterize the process of the emergence of special relativity theory and the old quantum theory, author also raises the issue of the role of genius and imagination in the process of searching for new scientific theories. The work is based on rich factual material, however, has several weaknesses and — as it seems — several places that would not require greater precision. This work aims to identify these points.

The relations between science and religion are very interesting subject of his reflection. It is also an element of his general description of reality, the description of very precise construction. The very modern character of remarks of the polish physicist in this area is also to be emphasized, as well as an attempt of location of relations between religion and science in social context.

Particular emphasis is placed on biographical details, some aspects of the creation of his most famous work, and his popularization activities and philosophical interests, especially regarding science and the influence of French conventionalism.
It turns out that in works such as “Reality in terms of natural science” or “The Principle of Relativity and some of its applications”, Białobrzeski appears to be a naturalist very well versed in philosophical topics related to sciences. The story behind Białobrzeski’s most famous work, “Sur l’équilibre thermodynamique d’une sphère gazeuse libre” which emerges from his correspondence with Władysław Natanson, is also interesting.
