Growing cities are destroying their rural edge while shrinking cities are creating a new rural urbanism, often in their urban centre. This paper describes the instrumentality of design and its enabling function in achieving new typologies for peri-/inter-urban rural land with key drivers being state-of-the-art technology and mapping techniques. Peri-urban economics require new land-tenure models and innovative forms of agriculture that synthesise agriculture, nature conservation, infrastructure and communities. The paper also looks at small-scale community innovations including a number of initiatives in Penrith, Western Sydney, such as Out & About in Penrith which explored community activities in local open space, Penrith as a Regional City Garden with diverse models of urban agriculture and the Cooling the Commons project which explores the role that forms of urban agriculture might play in adapting urban environments for liveability in a climate-changed future. Findings from these projects reveal the potential of mobile infrastructure and temporary urbanism for Western Sydney.

Stemming from such a fresh conservation thinking, the edited volume, Asian Heritage Management: Contexts, Concerns, and Prospects, delves into deep understanding of complex issues facing cultural heritage management in Asia. This well-integrated book is the result of the combined work of scholars and practitioners who generally are from Asia. Structured in three main parts (Part I, Contexts; Part II, Concerns; and Part III, Prospects), the book contains the Introduction and 17 main body chapters and ends with an Epilogue.

The research responds to the lack of qualitative information about: day to day living practices in outer suburban Sydney; the constraints people experience when trying to keep cool; and, people’s aspirations for more comfortable living environments. The study reviewed factors that combine to produce urban heating in Sydney’s rapidly developing urban fringe and the key socio- environmental issues that researchers have identified as important.
