Two U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers have been charged with taking bribes to let people enter the country without showing documents at America's busiest border crossing.
CBP Officers Farlis Almonte and Ricardo Rodriguez worked at the San Ysidro Port of Entry and prosecutors say they let dozens of vehicles carrying illegal immigrants pass through without proper checks in exchange for thousands of dollars.
According to court documents unsealed Thursday, investigators found phone messages between the officers and human smugglers in Mexico. They also found large unexplained cash deposits in the officers’ bank accounts.
In one case caught on surveillance video, a car stopped at a checkpoint with two people inside, but only the driver was officially recorded as entering the U.S., prosecutors said.
When Almonte was arrested, investigators also allegedly seized nearly $70,000 in cash they believe his girlfriend was trying to take to Tijuana. Prosecutors say he may face more charges, including money laundering and trying to hide evidence, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.
"Any Customs and Border Protection agent who helps smugglers is breaking their oath and putting our national security at risk," said Acting U.S. Attorney Andrew Haden.

These operations are part of ongoing efforts by the Somali government to push back al-Shabaab snuffies and reclaim territory controlled by the group in southern Somalia.
Several mortar shells hit residential neighborhoods near the Somali presidential palace in Mogadishu on Saturday morning, leaving at least two people injured.
The mortar attack took place in key areas in the Warta-Nabada district close to the heavily fortified presidential compound, with initial reports suggesting the victims were civilians.
The Somali Security forces have arrived at the site and launched an investigation, though no group has yet grabbed credit for the assault.
The strike comes as security in Mogadishu has been gradually improving in recent months, despite ongoing political instability and security concerns.

At least six people were maimed Saturday when mortar shells struck residential areas in Mogadishu, close to the presidential palace housing Somalia's top leaders, including the president, prime minister, and house speaker, local officials said.
The shells landed in the Warta Nabada and Bondhere districts, according to Aden Osman, a witness from the nearby Shibis area. He told Garowe Online that a Koran school teacher and an elderly woman were among those seriously injured and were rushed to hospital.
Somali security forces swiftly cordoned off the area, imposed movement restrictions, and opened an investigation into the type of mortar used in the attack, officials said.

John Fetterman is among the most outspoken Democratic supporters of Israel in the US Senate. He and Gisele recently traveled to the country, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gifted him a silver-plated pager as an homage to an anti-Hezbollah military operation last year.
Fetterman’s stance has made him a frequent target of protests, but until this week, he tweeted, they had focused on his home and workplace.
