True Romantics of the 19th century believed that music was a language and vehicle for thoughts, ideas and emotion. Music was not mere entertainment but a free medium of expression and personal exploration. To achieve this composers pushed the limits of pre-existing Classical conventions and experimented upon different methods of self-expression; which was a effect of the socio-economic shifts of the French Revolution in Europe (1789-1799) and the ever- lasting impact that Beethoven’s late compositional period had on harmonic and structural development.
