They have an opportunity to master the agenda and formulate it not only in all importance and complexity but also in the diversity of aspects to be included for proper understanding of the climate change concept by the public. In doing so they build on existing agendas by policymakers, scholars, and other actors, but also have their agency to be exercised in all responsibility and by specific knowledge. The overall task for media is to build a consistent and coherent narrative that will serve as a base for understanding current issues. However, analysis of Latvian media shows that a vast number of publications tend to speak about climate change in general terms, without being devoted to a particular domain of issues. The results on the dynamics of publication and reach of the audience of the content can be interpreted by discerning three general groups of cl...

The...

Our intention was to use the concept of “good death” as it has been described in academic literature on the end of life to describe what circumstances of dying are preferred in Latvian population. A nationally representative survey of Latvian permanent residents (n = 1012) was conducted in October 2020. The obtained answers are analysed in different demographic groups, as well as in connection with other respondents’ perceptions and values. The results of the study show that the possibility of dying in pain and suffering is a major concern for the majority of Latvian society, and a large percentage of people would like to leave their lives in sleep or sudden death. The results of the study also show people’s desire to be in their homes at the time of death, to die in the presence of relatives. The survey shows a statistically significant relationship between people’s perception...

It was the first programme in Latvia that was developed based on topical ideas about art as research and practice-based artistic research. This approach to art education can be described as strongly critical to neoliberalist treatment of art and, particularly in Europe, was also a part of reaction from the side of art educators and practitioners to changes started by the Bologna process in the field of higher (art) education. The approach was integrated purposefully into the philosophy of New Media Art studies and research at Liepāja University, first of all by establishing MPLab – a Laboratory of Art Research as a space for creative growth where every student has more freedom and independence but is required to be able to mobilise independently and think critically and creatively. In this article, the basic assumptions for programme development, main events, and results are p...

As a relatively small and specific area of journalistic practice, it operates in the intersection between media, culture in general, and arts and creative industries. The complexity, heterogeneity and variability of the field is determined by the major changes transforming all three intersecting areas – the new media, diversity of genres and the audience practices that characterize contemporary communication; liquidity and hybridity is a mark of the global postindustrial society, whereas art is more and more framed by the rise and convertibility of the concepts of creative class, production, and capital. The self-reflection, conceptualisation of their work and the object of report and reference – culture – by the editors and producers from the Latvian cultural media outlets and departments is the topic of this paper. The main conclusions are that their concepts of culture, cultura...

The aim of this paper is not to blame or replace the broadly spread two-word term plašsaziņas līdzekļi with an anglicism mediji. In Latvia, there are many titles and documents where this term has a permanent and stable place. Such as, for example, The National Electronic Mass Media Council. At the same time, it is time to recognise the use of the word medijs(i) as an entirely accepted synonym of plašsaziņas līdzeklis(ļi) and even as a semantically more broadly usable term in the context of developing information and communication technologies. As this short insight into the research of the word shows, the term is already currently used not only among professionals but also on the level of state institutions, public and private organisations, and companie...

This article analyses the interrelations between encouragement measures implemented by media policy and the perception of media literacy in society. The research employs data from a national representative survey (May 2019; N=1,017 respondents). The study explores the respondents’ media literacy perceptions; opinions on risks potentially caused by insufficient media literacy skills; and respondents’ experience with MIL activities. The survey results are compared with survey data on media literacy encouragement measures, aims and target audiences obtained from the Media Policy Unit at the Ministry of Culture media literacy partners. The theoretical background is supported by the media literacy ideological model, which explains media literacy within relationships with the social institutions in which it is practiced...

The last are used as an alternative medium of subculture, even if majority of the public fails to notice it or else interprets it, contrary to culture’s ordered world of meanings, as chaotic “dirt” more closely related to nature than culture. The discourse of messages found in the public space - on the façades of surfaces forming urban space, can be interpreted in a countercultural code and is for the subculture of graffiti itself, a battle taking place for the aesthetization of the public space. This is the answer provided by the rebellious sons to the “fathers of the city”, who possess money and power with which to design urban public space using architectural means. The generation of sons, who are excluded from this real estate discourse due to a lack of means, put into play the only thing they own, i.e. their body, which they subject to the danger of imprisonment, because...

In total, 860 publications were analysed covering both Latvian and Russian speaking media content, and the following two methodological approaches were applied: the framing analysis of textual and visual content, and historical discourse analysis in order to reveal the arguments and strategies behind the justification of intolerance. The research data reveals that the framing of migration in Latvian media is left in the hands of politicians and officials. Economic strains and threat argumentation topoi dominate media discussions. The influence of migration is explained and approached from an economic perspective, and most frequently, the intolerance against migrants is interpreted as a failure attributed to the political elite – their inability to solve problems. Intolerance justification strategies were detected in 79% of the publications. This figure confirms that the authors are aware of intoleran...

In this case graffiti can be regarded as a non-violent protest that was theoretically described by Henry David Thoreau in the treatise on “The Duty of Civil disobedience”, a work that has become an essential part of anthologies of political and social philosophy. To a certain degree, in its visual format, graffiti is a continuation of the “samizdat” tradition dating back to the Soviet era, both in the sense of a socially critical message and in the use of an alternative medium. Proposing a new, tactical usage of technology critically directed against technocracy of contemporary society youth of the city is trying to occupy it’s public space by specific type of aesthetization and, in the same time, is delivering clear message. The aim of the research is to understand on the basis of the theoretical review of Foucault’ s works and secondary literature the evolution of the reasoning on pathology in different works by the French author. In the first part of the paper we describe how Foucault came to the idea that psychiatric and organic must be treated as completely different. In the second part, we ad more sociocultural context and discuss Foucault’s ideas in the perspective of developing modernity.
