Stadsfinancien, staatsvorming en economie in het hertogdom Gelre, ca. 1350-1550. Hoe ontwikkelden de lokale overheidsfinancien zich in de laatmiddeleeuwse Nederlanden? Wie had wat te zeggen over belastingen en welke invloed had dit op de economie en de sociale verhoudingen? Leidde meer inspraak van de burgerij tot meer bereidheid om belastingen te betalen? Het zijn slechts enkele vragen waarop deze studie een antwoord geeft. Over het algemeen wordt aangenomen dat de Gelderse steden in de veertiende eeuw hun economische hoogtijdagen hebben beleefd, en dat zich vanaf het midden van de vijftiende eeuw – voornamelijk onder druk van de langdurige conflicten tussen Gelre en de Bourgondisch-Habsburgse vorsten – een proces van langdurige stagnatie voltrok. In deze studie wordt aan de hand van een analyse van de stadsfinancien van Arnhem en Zutphen gezocht naar de samenhang tussen politiek, economie en de ontwikkeling van de lokale overheidsfin...

Public finances were an important instrument to extract the capital needed for the realisation of political goals from the economic systems which could be effectively controlled by both local and regional power holders. In this way, both taxation and public debt have been at the centre of many studies into the functioning of urban public finances in the late medieval and early modern Low Countries. The socio-political and economic aspects of urban finances and the management of urban fiscal systems and public debt are relatively well studied, but this only holds true for the highly urbanised and most economically dominant regions within the Low Countries, i.e. Flanders, Brabant, and from the fourteenth century onwards the county of Holland. Much less is known about the socio-political backgrounds of and the interplay between the political elites, urban officials, and tax-farmers which had a role in the management of the urban fiscal systems and public debt in the smaller towns in the more &quot;peripheral&quot; and relatively less-urbanised regions in the Eastern Netherlands and the adjacent German territories.

It discusses the domain of the Broekerhof near the villa Velp, which was granted to the Chapter of St. Pete in Utrecht by Holy Roman king Henry IV in 1076.

In 1530, the domain came into the hands of Charles, duke of Guelders. Shortly afterwards, the duke started building the castle of Biljoen. In 1535, the castle was granted to Roelof van Lennep, a Guelders military leader.

In most towns in the late medieval Low Countries, local breweries supplied the local population w... more In most towns in the late medieval Low Countries, local breweries supplied the local population with the staple drink beer. First brewed with a herb mixture called gruit, the sale of which was originally a lordly privilege which was transferred to towns since the 13th century, since the second quarter of the 14th century the brewing of hopped beers spread from Holland to neighbouring territories.

In this article, I reconstructed the production and consumption patterns of hopped and imported beers in the medium-sized town of Arnhem in the duchy of Guelders between 1350 and 1550. This reconstruction is based on the medieval town accounts, which are preserved from 1353 onwards. They provide quantitative and qualitative data with which these production and consumption patterns can be discerned. Additionally, based on a fragment of the administration of the bierdragers, the consumption pattern throughout the year could be linked to the calendar of local religious feasts, market days and other events.
