To the present, research has focused on ferries from a local perspective and largely in the context of early modern and modern transport networks. This thesis represents a first step toward filling in the gaps in the current historiography by addressing ferries from the perspective of the transport network of England and Wales as a whole. The primary evidence for this study derives from the Calendars of the Inquisitions Post Mortem and the Calendars of the Patent Rolls. Evidence from these documents was collected in a database and analyzed to provide an overview of lay ownership of ferries from the late-thirteenth to the early-fifteenth centuries. Various published economic and legal sources from medieval and early modern England were also consulted to provide additional context.
