Synopsis: In 1530, Lucas Cranach (1472–1553) was appointed by Elector John Frederick I of Saxony ... more Synopsis: In 1530, Lucas Cranach (1472–1553) was appointed by Elector John Frederick I of Saxony (1503–1554) to paint an altarpiece for the Church of Saint Wolfgang in the town of Schneeberg. The commission of this painting coincided with the town's decision to adhere to the religious movement initiated by Martin Luther (1483–1546). Together with Cranach, Luther elaborated a complex programme of artistic representation including the translation of famous sermons into visual forms. Confirming Luther's ultimately positive attitude towards religious images, the Schneeberg Altarpiece was nonetheless conceived in ways that would prevent the congregates from indulging in superstitious worshipping. Cranach's astounding outcome lays bare a reflection on the role of spatial construction in influencing the viewers' response to religious images. Reacting to the illusionism conveyed by the invention of perspective and the influence of Italian art, Cranach devised a composition that was highly fragmented designed to support preaching rather than to create the illusion of the presence of divine beings. This paper intends to examine the visual devices put in place by Cranach in his attempt to create a purely educational tool for preaching. Supported by literary sources which presented the influence of Renaissance painting as dangerous to the spiritual integrity of Christians, this paper will reassess the impact of Lutheran ideas on modern painting while commenting on their influence on later developments. Bio: Andrea Gatti is a researcher in the field of medieval and early modern religious iconography. He graduated in History of Medieval Art at the University of Milan in 2013 and obtained a second MA in Intellectual and Cultural History (1300 – 1650) at the Warburg Institute in 2014. He has worked as Research Assistant for Judith Clark's Studio and The Barbican Centre for the making of two exhibitions relating to the history of costume and fashion. His interests include the iconography of Genesis and production of visual supports for memory during the Middle Ages.
