An attempt is made to review current understanding and capabilities in the field of digital speech coding and to discuss the near-term outlook for new advances. Issues of total optimization are largely outside the scope of this paper, but an attempt is made to indicate the implications that code designs have for some inevitable system issues, such as transmission error rate, multiple coding (tandeming), variable-rate coding, packet transmission, and encryption.
