The CAP operating system [Wilkes79b] has recently undergone a major redesign in order to make its only peripheral the Cambridge Data Ring [Wilkes79a]. The revised system uses the shared servers attached to the network instead of having a set of its own private peripherals. This paper describes how the Cambridge File Server, described in a companion article [Dion80], is used by the CAP computer as a remote backing store. Both file loading and swapping now take place over the network. Appropriate use of the abstractions and facilities provided by the file server has allowed a large amount of the filing system apparatus, including both programs and data structures, to be removed from the CAP operating system.
