The present volume, on the basis of statistical data available in the USSR and other countries, considers in detail the influence of road conditions on the safety of traffic and pedestrians, sets out the merits and shortcomings of various methods of assessing road conditions and proposes a complex method of assessment taking into consideration the basic parameters of roads and their influence on traffic safety. Attention is also given to the ways of ensuring traffic safety in designing new roads and highways, and in the reconstruction, repair and maintenance of existing ones. The book is intended for students of highway engineering and is an English translation of an original Russian book published in 1970./TRRL/
