Compilations and analyses of space-group frequencies are reviewed. A new analysis of the
distribution of space groups for molecular crystals brings out the role of molecular symmetry
in influencing crystal packing. Some space groups occur predominantly, and some almost
exclusively, when molecules of appropriate symmetry occupy special positions. The relative
importance of various molecular symmetry elements in governing crystal packing is
discussed.
