Dev agencies, if you don’t want to be treated as a commodity, stop acting like one. - Learn the business context for engineering needs - Stop squeezing your clients every opportunity you get - Prioritize transparency, communication, and accountability In short, position yourself as a partner that uses tech to solve business problems. You really can’t complain about being seen as a commodity if you treat everything as a transaction.

One thing that keeps appearing with the dev leaders I speak to daily: And this is a common yet detrimental trend within the software dev market. They all spray and pray with acquisition. Either relying on referrals or existing demand to grow. Now, they may generate some opportunities through these channels, but in the long run they likely work with clients they wouldn't if they had a plethora of dream opportunities at their fingertips. Most companies completely shatter their chances of speaking with dream clients as they leave their marketing up to the words of others. Not knowing 'who' to target or 'how' to target them is the easiest way to remain in the same position as a company year by year. Becoming everything to everyone directly affects their revenue growth.

Conference Drama + Cringe 🙄 I could use some hugs or LOLz 🤗 I wasn't going to say anything, but I'm still hearing from folks still expecting to see me at the Innovate QA Events conference. ***To be clear, I will not be there*** I don't want to be part of any 'false advertising', as I'm still listed on the program @ https://lnkd.in/g-Zh3P_n . I'd asked to be removed right away, and asked that they would make sure folks knew that i wouldn't be there, and they said they would. But, I'm still on the public schedule, haven't seen them tell folks I won't be there, and people are reaching out to me expectig me to present and wanting to meet at the conference. They'd asked me to speak, and I agreed to do it for free, on whatever topics would be helpful to them, In the interest of supporting the #testing community in the #seattle area. Cringe: They told me they were kicking me off the schedule. Which is super awkward, never happened before, but OK. The crazy thing is the reason I was told I was booted 😂 --I don't want folks to think I bailed on them, or I'd done something weird. What I was told: They took on a sponsor, who thought I was "competitive", and demanded that I be removed from the conference or they would pull their sponsorship. Super strange I thought, and unprofessional at best. Crazier, the conference actually agreed to do it. 🤡 I guess I could think of it as a backhanded compliment? There is only one sponsor right now, and the company name rhymes with testRigor, as in "Rigor mortis". Extra dissappointing, is that I remember trying to help the founder of that company at a conference a few years ago encouraging him to not give up over dinner at a mexican restaurant and picked up the bill. I even helped edit his pitch deck and gave him advice on fundraising--when he was officially a "competitor". 🙄 More awkard, testRigor just had a webinar related to the conference that was, well, it was a poorly executed sales pitch were when he tried to demo the integration of AI into his product, it failed to execute a test step correctly, and kept clicking seemingly random things, eventually gave up, and essentially mumbled that, well the AI does strange things all the time. That video might be available online. That said, I hope the rest of the conference goes well, just know that I won't be there if you were expecting to hear about "Testing for AI Safety", or "AI can Test". And, I guess I won't be attending/supporting the conference or related #Seattle meetups. Felt I had to share so folks knew I was a 'good actor'--it could look strange from the outside, and I don't want folks to be surprised, or decieved. I intended to be there and follow through, and not my fault. Maybe karma isn't a thing, but at least I have my time back 🤔 🤷‍♂️

Few agencies without a technical lead are able to get by (and none thrive). Relying on contractors can be a double-edged sword: they bring specialized skills but often lack a cohesive vision that aligns technology with your customer’s long-term goals. This disconnect results in software bloat, where unnecessary features and technical debt pile up. The pain is real: without a consistent, forward-thinking approach, your business is at risk of compounding technical debt that will stifle innovation. Don’t let short-term fixes lead to long-term problems. It’s time to rethink how you approach technology, ensuring it supports—not stifles—your growth.

Today the Flow.com team heralded in a new chapter in their bid to bring web3 to the masses. The release of Cadence 1.0 is probably the biggest update to the flow network since its inception. There are many articles on the benefits so I won't go into that, but suffice it to say that this stable release provides the much needed certainty for developers, projects and creators that has been so desperately needed. This update also brings EVM to flow. Again lots of information on this, but I am extremely excited by this prospect. It finally means that we can bring all of the power that Flow has to offer and match that with the Excellent progress made in the EVM network, without feeling like they are competing technologies. A true Symbiosis, with software working in a complimentary way to produce better, stronger, more contentful experiences. Being so closely involved with the Flow team, I have been privileged to have some insight into the hard work, dedication and passion shown by everyone working so hard to create software and infrastructure that is accessible, innovative and usable for everyone. It's infectious and inspiring. Roham Gharegozlou should be very proud of the excellent team he has built. Pride is something I am not short of currently. 21 days ago, my team took on a challenge. To build a kick ass block explorer, worthy of such a monumental update to the chain. I think many felt it wasn't possible, I myself was honestly unsure, however, my team do not comprehend can't do! It was this can do attitude and absolute grit and determination that meant we delivered! after many many late nights, very little sleep and a lot of "creative" discussion, I have the immense pride in presenting https://flowscan.io. While it is very much in a Beta phase, what the team have produced in the time available is nothing short of a miracle. This little win in our contribution to web3 really does highlight to me that with the right people in the right places. Anything is possible. Let’s talk about that switch to a modern web solution… 😉 On a serious note, this really sucks for small business owners who are tied into a WP set up using Engine.
