Data are from a cohort of 3,478 Australian young adults who were followed up from birth to age 21

We also examine bank characteristics to determine what explains the cross-sectional and time-series variation in the returns’ sensitivity. Similar to non-financial firms, we find that only unanticipated components affect bank equity returns; however, this affect is absent in the second half of our sample period. Smaller, less liquid banks have higher sensitivity; a higher ratio of time deposits to total deposits reduces this sensitivity. A higher ratio of non-interest income to total income also reduces this sensitivity, while capital-constrained banks have a higher sensitivity to monetary policy innovations. We argue that a higher dependence on non-interest income and the use of interest rate derivatives together may explain the disappearing influence of monetary policy on these BHCs.

We find that board size, CEO tenure and board tenure enhance bank performance. However, we find no evidence that board structure or CEO power influences bank performance. More importantly, we show that the effect of board characteristics during the crisis is quite different. During the crisis, board size has a negative effect on Tobin’s Q and the non-performing asset ratio, which supports Jensen’s (1993) argument that large boards are less likely to function effectively. Further, we report that the non-performing asset ratio decreases with board independence during the crisis.

Improved maternal education can contribute effectively to reduce child malnutrition. We examined the long-term impact of maternal education on the risk of malnutrition in U5s and quantified the level of education required for the mothers to reduce the risk. We used pooled data from five nationwide demographic and health surveys conducted in 1996-1997, 1999-2000, 2004, 2007 and 2011 in Bangladesh involving 28 941 U5s. A log-binomial regression model was used to examine the association between maternal education (no education, primary, secondary or more) and malnutrition in children, measured by stunting, underweight and wasting controlling for survey time, maternal age, maternal body mass index, maternal working status, parity, paternal education and wealth quintile. An overall improvement in maternal educational attainment was observed betw...

To derive feasible policy implications, we estimate not only pooled regressions, but also variance decompositions of GDP growth rates to examine what proxy measures of financial development are most important in economic growth over time and how much they contribute to economic growth across geographic regions and income groups. We find strong linkages between financial development and economic growth in high-income OECD countries, but not in East Asia and Pacific, South Asian and Sub-Saharan African regions, in the short run. Therefore, it may be necessary for Morocco to make different policy efforts to achieve steady economic growth in the long run.

This study was conducted for two years (2008-2009) in outpatient and inpatient department of both paediatrics and medicine discipline of Khulna Medical College Hospital. Nasal and throat swab specimens were collected from each influenza like illness (ILI) case and kept together in a virus transport media and transported to international centre for diarrhoeal disease and research, Bangladesh laboratory. Influenza virus was detected by rRT-PCR including types and subtypes. A total of 526 patients were enrolled during the study period with the mean (SD) age of 19 (17) years. Identification of influenza virus was 14% and positive cases were mostly found in under-five children (24%). The vast majority (88%) of influenza cases were found during April to September. Virus detection rate was higher in inpatient department (IPD) (21%) than in outpatient department (12%). The dominant virus type and subtype was influenza A (87%) and H3 (49%), respectively. Type A was significantly higher than type B in causing severe illness compared to ILI (OR=7.04, 95%CI: 2.76-18.7, P<0.01). Headache and chest indrawing was found in significantly higher proportion (P<0.05) in influenza positive IPD cases. Among 31 hospitalized cases majority (77%) recovered completely except two cases that needed referral for additional support. Influenza mostly affected under-five children and young adult. The peak season here was late summer and rainy season.

However, little is known about whether maternal smoking in pregnancy predicts other offspring cardiovascular risk factors including waist circumference (WC), waist-hip-ratio (WHR), pulse rate (PR), systolic (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). We studied a sub-sample of 2038 (50% males) young adults who were born in Brisbane, Australia to investigate the prospective association of maternal smoking during pregnancy with young adult cardiovascular risk factors. We compared offspring mean BMI, WC, WHR, SBP, DBP and PR and the risk of being overweight and obese at 21 years by three mutually exclusive categories of maternal smoking status defined as never smoked, smoked before and/or after pregnancy but not in pregnancy or smoked during pregnancy and other times. Offspring of mothers who smoked during pregnancy had greater mean BMI, WC, WHR and PR and they were at greater risk of being obese at 21 years compare...
To examine the association between the mode of delivery and the risk of offspring obesity by age ... more To examine the association between the mode of delivery and the risk of offspring obesity by age 21 years using a large community-based birth cohort study in Australia. We followed-up a subsample of 2,625 offspring for whom we had measured physical assessments, including height and weight at 21 years and hospital-recorded mode of delivery, in the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, between 1981 and 1983. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference were measured at 21 years. Multivariable regression analysis was used to examine the independent associations of mode of delivery with offspring BMI and waist circumference. In the cohort, 12.1% were born by cesarean delivery. Maternal and birth factors independently associated with the mode of delivery were age, overweight and obesity status, smoking status during pregnancy, hypertensive disorder during pregnancy, and neonatal low birth weight. By 21 years, 21.5% of offspring were overweight and 12.4% were obese. Offspring overweight...
