One of the most interesting examples is vision of Pausanias’ “Description of Greece” in the Russian intellectual environment. The significant aspect of this phenomenon was a strong influence of German classical tradition on Russian culture first of all through the works by J. Winckelmann and G. Lessing. This translation was made in special commission under the name “Assembly for the translation of foreign books” and became the first one which was fulfilled from the Greek to the modern European language. It is also touched the problem on perception of the classical heritage in Russia in the Age of Enlightenment by both professional philologists and ordinary educated readers. An analysis of the European historical and literary heritage of the second half of the 18th century is important to understand the process by means of which ancient authors and their works became an inalienable part of Russian culture.

In the Late Antiquity and Byzantine period the authors who used The Description of Hellas in their works, treated it as an ambiguous opus, but recognized the credibility of most data on geography, mythology and art which it contains. This circumstance largely provided a certain relevance of Pausanias’ text in that period. On the basis of the analysis of works by Pausanias’ contemporaries and by later writers who used The Description of Hellas a conclusion is made that, despite the fact that it had a number of characteristics typical for the period of its creation, this text was a unique source which contained significant data on different aspects of the Classical Antiquity. On the one hand, the structure and contents of Pausanias’ work make it particular among other texts in the second century AD, and on the other hand, it combines characteristics typical for the texts of the most authoritative antique writers.
