The antioxidant properties of melatonin have been confirmed in various studies. This study aimed to investigate the effects of melatonin administration on oxidative stress in dogs before and after OHE. In this study, 25 mature female intact dogs were selected and randomly divided into five equal groups: Melatonin (melatonin, no surgery), OHE (no melatonin, surgery), OHE + melatonin (melatonin, surgery), anesthesia+melatonin (melatonin, sham surgery), and control (no melatonin, no surgery) groups. Melatonin (0.3 mg/Kg/day, p.o.) was administrated to the dogs in the melatonin, OHE + melatonin, and anesthesia+melatonin groups on days − 1, 0, 1, 2, and 3 (day 0 = OHE). Blood sampling was performed on days − 1, 1, 3, and 5 of the study. Blood samples were immediately transferred to the laboratory and sera were separated and stored at − 20 °C. Supe...

The foal was anxious and exhibiting signs of abdominal pain. The foal had not defecated in the previous 5 days and severe abdominal distension was present. Based on clinical signs and the results of the diagnostic work-up, gastrointestinal obstruction was suspected. Midline exploratory celiotomy revealed a faecalith in the small colon. A longitudinal incision was made through the antimesenteric border of the involved intestine and an approximately 350 g mass mostly composed of dried roughage was removed. The day after surgery, intestinal sounds were detectable; the foal defecated and had good appetite during the 9 months of follow up.

Degradation and repair of the articular cartilage – the most important involved structure – were investigated by measuring interleukin (IL) 1β and IL-6, joint markers of degradation and repair respectively. To this end, five mature large size mixed-breed male dogs were used for this study. Synovial fluid samples were obtained from joints by aseptic arthrocentesis before surgical sectioning of cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) and on days 14, 28, 90 and 180 after CCL transaction. Statistical analysis of the results showed that both cytokines exhibited an increasing pattern. IL-1β showed significant increase after six months and IL-6 showed a non-significant increase. There was no significant correlation between these cytokines during the study. We concluded that although both degradation and repair were in progress in osteoarthritic joints, degradation was predominant over repair when n...

It is essential to diagnose this condition as early as possible. The present study was conducted to measure the Osteoprotegerin (OPG) and Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) levels in synovial fluid and serum samples of dogs with experimental cruciate ligament rupture as a model of OA. In the present study, four adult (~ 20 months), large (weighing ~ 18 kg), mixed breed, male clinically healthy dogs were selected to investigate the effect of experimental OA, on OPG and TNF-α as a way of early detection of OA. OPG and TNF-α were measured in synovial fluid and serum on days 0, 14, 28, 90 and 180 after the surgical transaction of the cranial cruciate ligament in one stifle joint. Statistical analysis of the results showed that there was a significant increase in the concentrations of TNF-α in both synovial fluid and serum. Serum level of OPG showed a reduction before and ...

Histopathological examinations were performed on day 30 in the short-term group after the animals had been sacrifi ced and in the other group on day 180. The slope of changes over the course of the study between all 3 methods and the grade of changes, were both highest in histopathology, and then in MRI and radiology respectively. The slope of changes was 0.01 for histopatholo...

Silver-sulfadiazine (SSD) is the most commonly used topical antimicrobial agent in managing these wounds. We aimed to accelerate the healing of burn wounds by combined application of ovine acellular peritoneal matrix (OAPM), honey (H), and ovine fetal skin extract (OFSE). Sixty-four standardized burn wounds were created on the dorsum of 16 rats and were subsequently inoculated with Staphyloccocus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After 48 hr, the wounds were surgically debrided and received either physiologic saline (control group) or SSD, OAPM+SSD, OAPM+H+SSD, and OAPM+H+OFSE+SSD. The healing wounds were evaluated for size, bacterial counts, histopathology, and biomechanical properties on days 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 after surgery. All treatments had effectively reduced the level of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa on wounds compared to the control group by day 3 and 7. The wounds treated with combined application of OAP...

A 10-day-old calf was referred to clinic with mildly distended abdomen, history of umbilical dribbling and no signs of normal urination since birth. On clinical laboratory results and ancillary tests persistent patent urachus complicated with imperforated urethra and uroabdomen was diagnosed. After abdominocentesis under ultrasonography, exploratory laparotomy was performed. Persistent urachus was removed and attempts failed to insert a catheter into urethra. Then, a Foley catheter was placed into bladder and passed through subcutaneous tissues and exited lateral to the umbilical region from skin. The calf voided via the catheter right after standing up and showed clinical improvement for the two months after-discharge follow up.

Thoroughbred racehorses rarely show dorsal pastern subluxation (Thoroughbred ringbone) secondarily to an injury to the soft tissues supporting the fetlock. A 4-year-old Thoroughbred mare was presented with signs of lameness, swelling of the dorsal aspect of the pastern region of the right forearm and audible clicking sound when weight was placed on the limb. The condition seemed to have been developed as a consequence of extreme overexertion 4 days before referral. Radiographic examination of a non-weight bearing limb showed dorsal subluxation of the pastern joint. Under general anesthesia the affected limb was immobilized by cast after reduction of the luxated bone into the PIPJ. The affected limb was kept immobilized for four weeks. Then the cast was removed and the animal was given rest for two months. Consequently, weight bearing on the affe...
