Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted of 121 1 st-year medical students at Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences, Karwar, Karnataka, India. The extent of their stress was assessed using the PSS-14 and their sleep quality was assessed using the PSQI. Graded stress exerted by the attributed stressors was also assessed. Results: A total of 33.8% of participants had perceived stress scores of >28. Among academic stressors, performance in examinations (34.7%), lack of time for recreation (30.6%), curriculum (24.8%), and frequency of examinations (24.8%) were the highest rated stressors. Quality of food in the mess (50.4%) and lack of entertainment in the institution (39.7%) were the highest rated psychosocial stressors. There was a positive correlation between the PSS-14 scores and various academic stressors and the global PSQI score. Conclusion: First-year medical students reported a high level of stress, including academic and psychosocial stressors. Effective changes in the curriculum and living conditions can reduce the level of stress among these students. academic and clinical performance [12], and alcohol and substance abuse [13]. The right amount of stress can be a helpful, positive force. However, too much stress can lead to tension and anxiety and can cause sleep problems. First-year medical students begin their careers unaware and unprepared to cope with the challenges of the profession. If high levels of unwanted stress are not properly managed, their health and sense of well-being can suffer. Hence, there is a need to create a compassionate and stress-free competitive environment within the campus to avoid consequences such as depression, sleep problems, tension, anxiety, work mistakes, poor concentration, and apathy. The extent of perceived stress, its association with sleep quality, and the attributed stressors among 1 st-year medical students were explored in this study.

Overall the results obtained in the current study support the notion that there is difference in psychosocial aspects among the two groups though not statistically significant for stress, anxiety and depression (p>0.05). However sleep parameters were more affected in male than the female population. These results can be used as a subjective measure to assess stress related problems. This plays a major role towards our understanding of gender differences and the need for health care planners to consider varied effects of psychosocial aspects in designing and implementing health policies.

Various studies examined the effects background music on different aspects of cognitive processing. The present study examined the effects of type of background music on speed of cognitive-motor performance using visual reaction time for different colors and auditory reaction time for different pitch sounds. To note the effect of background music on Visual and Auditory Reaction Time (VRT & ART). 30 subjects aged between 20-40yr having normal vision and hearing ability participated in the study. VRT and ART was recorded using Reaction time apparatus in a quiet room. Each type of stimulus was given 10 times randomly and the average reaction time for each type of stimulus was considered. Initially the recording was done without music and later with music in the background. Music played were rock of a bollywood song and instrumental. Paired t test applied showed statistically significant improvement (p<0.05) in VRT for yellow and green with music in the background either heavy metal or instrumental.. Significant improvement (p<0.05) in ART was noted to low and medium pitch sound with music in background. VRT improves with background music. ART for medium pitch sound improve with background music.

The study aimed to prospectively assess the sleep quality of newly joined medical students and to compare their initial sleep quality with that after 10 weeks. The study was conducted in Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences, Karwar, Karnataka. Prospective sleep quality of the students was assessed using Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) questionnaire. Assessment was done initially in the 1 st week of October 2016 and again after 10 weeks in the last week of Dec 2016. On comparing the average scoring of various components of PSQI of the participants during initial and after 10 weeks statistically insignificant difference is noted. Improvement in global PSQI score was seen in 39.67% of participants. On the contrary, deterioration in global PSQI score was noted in 41.32%. 19.01% of them showed no change. There is no significant difference in the prevalence of poor sleep quality after 10 weeks. But the subgroup of participants with global PSQI score ≥5 did not remain the same after 10 weeks. Sleep disturbance among newly joined medical students could be due to variety of stressors in the due course of their academics. Counseling and close monitoring is required to reduce stress experienced by these students.

The use of internet has become part and parcel of their life. The study was done with the aimof assessing the compulsiveness of internet usage among medical students and the associated behavioral changes due to excessive use. A Cross-sectional study was conducted over I MBBS students. A self-reported proforma consisting of socio-demographic profile, duration of mobile use, purposes for which mobile used and time spent, opinion on internet use over mobile phone and behavioral changes associated, and Compulsive internet usage scale were given. Data was compiled and analyzed.11.21% had CIUS score >28. There was positive correlation between CIUS score and internet usage duration (r=0.41). Behavioral changes noted in the group with CIUS score >28 was significantly higher than the group with score ≤28 (p=0.02). Gender difference in behavioral change was noted in the group with CIUSscore >28.Though the compulsive internet use seem to be relatively less among medical students over usage of internet affects the health of medical students in the form unhealthy behavioral changes which could affect their academic performance.

Aims and objectives: To study the quality of sleep among newly joined I MBBS students using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Physiology Department at Karwar Institute of Medical Sciences, Karwar. Out of 150 students 125 participated voluntarily. Their socio-demographic profile and sleep quality during the last one month was assessed using PSQI. Results : 16(12.8%) reported fairly bad/very bad sleep quality, 17(13.6%) reported more than 30 min, 56 (44.8%) reported sleep duration of less than or equal to 6hr. Habitual sleep efficiency is relatively better with decreased sleep duration. 21(16.8%) reported sleep disturbance once or twice a week and 1 (0.8%) reported three or more times a week, 8(6.4%) participants were using sleep medication, 22(17.6%) reported 3 or >3 score for daytime dysfunction. 54.4% had Global PSQI score 5 and more than 5. Statistically insignificant gender difference in sleep quality was noted. Conclusion: A high prevalence of sleep disturbance among newly joined medical students can be reduced by proper planning, counseling and orienting the students towards the course.

Racial influence is one among them. The aim of this study is to note the racial influence on pulmonary function test parameters between Nigerian and Indian students. The Subjects included 13 healthy Nigerian males and 14 healthy Indian males. They were all in the age group of 18-23 years. The study was done using RMS Helios spirometer-401 on a normal survey day. Considering height, weight and BMI the lung function seemed to be higher in Nigerians than in Indians but the difference was not statistically significant. This suggested a racial difference in pulmonary lung volumes between Nigerians and Indians which has to be confirmed on a larger population.
