Indonesia, one of the deprived nations with almost 250 million of population has become the world’s largest palm oil producer which contributes 61% of the total global palm oil production (Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (Gapki) and Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture). In the year 2001 RSPO (Round Table on Sustainable palm oil) was established as a global, multi stake holder initiative on sustainable palm oil with the principle objective is to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil in world wide. Nevertheless, the RSPO was established in 2001 for sustainable palm oil production, only 18% is produced as certified sustainable palm oil (CSPO) of the global production of 67million MT of crude palm oil (CPO). This creates a significant dilemma in the sustainability of oil palm industry. While understanding and reviewing the factors affected on sustainability of oil palm industry in Sri Lankan context, the sustainability of oil palm industry in global context has to be considered. This proposal will cover the factors affecting on sustainability of oil palm industry in Sri Lanka by considering the global context and special emphasis will be placed previous research findings on the topic
