They believe that any attempt to rebuild will cause them to fall back into the "trap" of metaphysics. Nowadays, writers, literary scholars and critics are beginning to wonder whether the poststructuralist way of thinking and its analytical methods can still be applied to the interpretation of contemporary literature. A new focal point of their work is the study of new concepts of subject. This article will introduce the concept of the ostensive sign developed by the American cultural theorist Eric Gans and the concept of framing suggested by the Munich literary scholar Raoul Eshelman. It will also apply these theories to new modes of gender construction in selected European fiction since the late 1990s and explain why poststructuralist ways of interpretation are no longer suitable for analyzing these novels.
