Given the particularly close literary relationship between Boccaccio’s and Ovid’s texts, we can read the net of literary similarities in terms of intertextuality and consider the selfdefense of the Roman poet as a real hypotext for the author of the Decameron, both aiming at a defense of art in general terms.

As the Flavians had just enlarged the boundaries of the Empire, the poet wisely chooses as theme the Argonauts’ mission, that is the novel of a victorious campaign of a group of heroes, to regain the Golden Fleece, and so to shift the balance of power back to them, together with exploring far-off lands. The way the poet eulogizes Vespasian reminds somehow Epicurus’ eulogy in the first book of Lucretian "De rerum natura". If it is possible to consider Vespasian «primus inventor» - as far as he has conquered new territories to Roman power -, even his desire to conquer and expand the can be seen as an example of the "maiorum virtus" aiming at advancing human knowledge at all.
