M.Arch Admissions


Admissions Information

The University of Utah utilizes an online admission application system called “SLATE.” The application can be completed online and submitted electronically once all required fields on the application have been completed. As a new user of the application system, you will first need to create a user account. After creating a user account, a unique PIN and password will be issued to you. The PIN and password will enable you to access, input and save information.

Application Deadlines and Requirements

To be considered for admission into the Master of Architecture (M.Arch) program, applicants must have a fully completed application on file with the School by the deadline corresponding to the semester the applicant wishes to enter the program:

Fall Semester (2-year M.Arch program), Summer Semester (3+ MArch. program): January 10

(Priority deadline for admissions and scholarships is January 10th. After January 10th rolling admissions until May 1st.)

  • (2) Letters of Recommendation
  • Digital Portfolio
  • Resume
  • Transcripts for undergraduate degree
  • English proficiency testing scores (for international students)

The following information provides tips on how to correctly complete specific sections of the online application. The headings below relate to the major sections in the online form.Program Information:

  • Intended graduate program and degree: “Architecture MAR"
  • Emphasis area: “Regular”
  • Application Term and Year: “Fall” for 2-year, “Summer” for 3+

Academic Background and Interest

Full-time or part-time status: Full-time attendance is required in the School of Architecture. Part-time status is only granted under special circumstances.

Master of Architecture Admissions Checklist

  • Complete pre-professional undergraduate architecture degree prior to desired entrance into the 2 yr M.Arch program (or an undergraduate degree in another field for 3+ M.Arch program)
  • Have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better
  • Submit an online graduate admissions application by January 10th
  • Pay application fee
  • Submit a digital portfolio to University of Utah School of Architecture via email, by January 10th
  • Include a full resume.

2024/25 Graduate Program Cost Estimates

NOTE: Information provided are estimates calculated based on tuition rates found on Bursar's and of Scholarship & Financial Aid ) webpages. The rates are subject to change per university policy. Tuition listed on this document includes university and differential tuition. Fees include university mandatory fees only (course fees are not included).

**M.Arch program allows students to choose DBU@BLUFF or DU@SLC track. Tuition listed in this documents reflects DBU@BLUFF track. Students who choose DBU@BLUFF track will take 8 credits in the summer of G1 year and 15 credits during fall G2 year. Students who choose DU@SLC track will take 9 credits in the summer of G1 year and 14 credits during fall G2 year.

***Books and supplies can cost can range between $300 - $600 depending on the format students choose for books (i.e. hard cover print, digital, rental) and the materials they choose to use in studio projects.

Evaluation of non-accredited degree transfer courses

All non-University of Utah students/graduates that are applying for the two-year Master of Architecture must submit the form below to demonstrate completion of the following coursework as part of their undergraduate degree in architecture equivalent to:
•     1 – Structural Systems Courses (3 credits each)
•     2 – History of World Architecture Courses (3 credits each)
•     2 – Architectural Theory and Criticism Courses one of which includes substantial engagement with Design Justice (3 Credits each)
•     General education courses including that may also meet the criteria listed above
The course work must satisfy National Architectural Accrediting Board student performance criteria, which are either met or partially met in the University of Utah’s Bachelor of Science program and serve as pre-requisites for admission to the Master of Architecture two-year program. The student shall have received a grade no less than B (3.0) in the courses in question. The NAAB SPC required for admission consideration are:
•     PC.4 History and Theory **
•     PC.8 Social Equity and Inclusion **
•     SC.4 Technical Knowledge *

If deficiencies in SPC are found to exist, the applicant’s curriculum will be modified to include additional coursework to satisfy the NAAB SPC requirements.

Transfer courses
 
Our M.Arch program currently does not accept transfer students; however, we may accept transfer credits for some courses. If you are interested in transferring graduate credit, after being accepted to the program, please follow the procedure below.
1. Reach out to architecture graduate advisor Brisa Zavala (brisa.zavala@utah.edu)
2. Submit coursework for a transfer evaluation to architecture graduate advisor, Brisa Zavala
a. Submit a google drive link with a folder for each class you want evaluated. Each folder should include a complete syllabus and course work, assignments, projects, and tests.
3. Coursework is evaluated by the Director of Graduate Studies in conversation with department faculty to determine if the materials and outcomes align adequately with NAAB requirements.
4. Architecture graduate advisor notifies student of final decision
