ProjectLibre Recognized With Open Source Excellence Award on SourceForge

By Community Team

We are happy to announce that SourceForge has recognized a number of exceptional projects on SourceForge with awards based on the value these projects provide to the open source community. One project we’d like to highlight is ProjectLibre, which was awarded the Open Source Excellence award. ProjectLibre is the number one project management alternative to Microsoft Project, and is now used on all 7 continents.

Open Source Excellence

Hear from Marc O’Brien, Co-Founder of ProjectLibre:

ProjectLibre is the #1 alternative to Microsoft Project. ProjectLibre has a sophisticated data structure that mirrors Microsoft Project so users interoperate and can simply open existing files on Linux, macOS or Windows. It is terrific to work with SourceForge and we appreciate your role in the community. Our team enjoys the interactive map displaying downloads around the world. There have been over 5,500,000 downloads and we have a vibrant ProjectLibre community. The community is thankful we offer it as open source and free! This month alone, ProjectLibre has been downloaded in 190 countries (darker green represents more downloads). Our users are on all 7 continents including projects being managed in Antarctica!

The ProjectLibre team receives messages weekly from people thankful for our open source alternative to Microsoft Project. It is meaningful to our team. Recent examples are architects in Turkey or engineering firms in India who can manage their projects without costly proprietary software. We get emails from people faced with the moral dilemma, having competitors pirating commercial software putting them at a business disadvantage. They can’t afford Microsoft but need to compete, managing projects and showing customers project plans. Microsoft Project desktop costs over $1,000 and the burden cost including Sharepoint etc. is much higher. Microsoft’s new versions Project for the Web and Project Online are widely considered a disaster and people can’t afford the desktop.

ProjectLibre is translated into 29 languages. The architects in Turkey or engineers in India can manage projects for free and in their native languages of Turkish, Hindi or even regional Tamil languages. Companies effectively manage their projects and remain ethical by not pirating. ProjectLibre has a sophisticated data model that mirrors Microsoft Project. This allows opening existing Microsoft files in ProjectLibre on Linux, macOS or Windows. If required you can even make changes in the projects and round trip the project file back to users on Microsoft.

ProjectLibre is also taught in over 1,500 Universities around the world! ProjectLibre and SourceForge are both making a difference in the world. Our team has been the founders of three software companies. The previous two were acquired and it prevented fulfilling our mission. We are excited and working seven days a week as we are dedicated to making a difference in the world. We have established a ProjectLibre YouTube Channel with many instructional videos. We also speak at many events on both the project management discipline and also open source software. The ProjectLibre team has a lot more to accomplish and appreciate having SourceForge as a partner.

Thank you SourceForge!

ProjectLibre, congratulations on being recognized with the Open Source Excellence award from SourceForge. From everyone at SourceForge, we are proud to host ProjectLibre on SourceForge.
