Welcome to Expat, a stream-oriented XML parser library written in C. Expat excels with files too large to fit RAM, and where performance and flexibility are crucial. There are a number of applications, libraries, and hardware using Expat, as well as bindings and 3rd-party wrappers. Expat is packaged everywhere. This is Expat, a C99 library for parsing XML 1.0 Fourth Edition, started by James Clark in 1997. Expat is a stream-oriented XML parser. This means that you register handlers with the parser before starting the parse. These handlers are called when the parser discovers the associated structures in the document being parsed. A start tag is an example of the kind of structure for which you may register handlers.
